Yumthang Valley is a river meadow at about 3,564 m, 24 km and 1–1.5 hours above Lachung, inside the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary. Rhododendrons and primulas flower from late April to June; snow covers it in winter. It is visited on an early-morning drive from Lachung with a protected area permit.

Known for
Rhododendrons, primulas, yaks, hot spring, winter snow
Yumthang is a broad, flat-floored valley where the Lachung Chu meanders between grassy banks, with forested slopes of fir and rhododendron climbing to snow peaks on both sides. A forest rest house is the only permanent building. Yaks and cattle graze the meadows in summer, a few stalls sell tea, noodles and boot hire near the road, and in spring the slopes turn pink, red, white and yellow with rhododendron.
Almost every visitor comes the same way: a pre-dawn start from Lachung, an hour or so in the valley, then either on to Zero Point or back to Lachung for breakfast and the drive to Gangtok. That rhythm exists for good reason. Mornings are usually clear and cloud often closes in by late morning, especially from April onwards. Arrive by 7 or 8 am for the best light and the quietest meadow.
Yumthang sits at about 3,564 m, high enough for headaches in people who have come straight up from the plains. Walk slowly, keep warm and drink water. Winter brings deep snow from about December to March, when the road may close for days. Children under five are not permitted, and foreign nationals need a group permit through a registered agent. Check current status before you travel.
Highlights
What to see and do
Rhododendron bloom
From late April into May the slopes and forest edges of Yumthang and the Shingba sanctuary flower in pink, red, white and yellow. Early species start in March lower down; high bushes flower into June. A late snowfall can push the peak back by a week or two.
The riverside meadow
The Lachung Chu winds through a flat, open meadow, rare in Sikkim's steep valleys. Walk along the bank, cross on the small bridges and watch for yaks. It is the easiest walking at this height, but go slowly at 3,564 m.
Primulas and summer flowers
After the rhododendrons, primulas, poppies, iris and other alpine flowers cover the meadow from May to July. The monsoon brings the most flowers but also the worst roads, so June is a gamble.
Snow-covered valley
From December to March Yumthang often lies under deep snow. When the road opens, it is a white, silent valley and a favourite for families, but expect cold around −5 to 5 °C and sudden closures.
Gateway to Zero Point
Yumthang is the turning point for most trips, but the road continues about 23 km to Zero Point (Yumesamdong) at about 4,660 m, usually as a paid add-on of ₹3,000–4,000 per vehicle.
The story of Yumthang Valley
Hooker's rhododendrons and the Shingba forests
In 1849 the botanist Joseph Dalton Hooker travelled up the Lachung valley collecting plants, and the rhododendrons he described and sent back from Sikkim helped start a craze for the shrub in British gardens. The forests he walked through below Yumthang are now protected as the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, established in 1984 and covering about 43 square kilometres, according to Wikipedia's article on Mangan district. Wikipedia's sanctuary article counts about forty rhododendron species within it. The sanctuary is often cited as a habitat of Rhododendron niveum, Sikkim's state tree, which bears lilac to purple flowers. Flowering starts low in March and climbs the valley through April and May, with the last high blooms in June. In summer, Lachung families take their cattle and yaks up to these meadows, a seasonal grazing pattern the valley has followed for generations. When you drive through the forest on the way to the meadow, ask your driver to stop for five minutes: the sanctuary is the reason the valley still looks the way Hooker saw it.

Skiing has been organised at times in the Yumthang area and at Phuni near Lachung, on simple slopes without lifts or a resort.

Yumthang is included in every Lachung package. Vehicles leave Lachung at 5–6 am, take 1–1.5 hours for 24 km, and return by late morning, or continue to Zero Point.
Private car
A registered private SUV booked through an agent gives you more time in the valley and the choice of stops in the Shingba forest. The same permit is needed.
From Bagdogra / NJP
Fly or train to Bagdogra or NJP, drive to Gangtok (4.5–5 hours by NH10, or via Kalimpong when NH10 is closed), sleep, then go to Lachung the next day and Yumthang the morning after.
Indian travellers need a protected area permit for Lachung, Yumthang, Zero Point, Lachen, Thangu and Gurudongmar, issued only through Sikkim Tourism-registered agents and tied to a registered tourist vehicle; operators require a minimum two-night stay. Dzongu needs its own permit, usually obtained in Mangan. Children under five are not permitted in North Sikkim protected areas. Foreign nationals need the online Sikkim restricted area permit and may visit Lachung, Yumthang and Zero Point on a group permit, but not Gurudongmar; for Lachen and Thangu, ask us. Check current status before you travel.
There is nowhere to stay in Yumthang itself apart from the forest rest house, which is not normally open to tourists. Everyone sleeps in Lachung, 24 km below. Budget travellers can stay with a Lachungpa family homestay; Snow Lion Mountain Resort and Fortuna Lachung are good value; Le Coxy Resort is a comfortable family choice; and Yarlam Resort is the top hotel in the valley. Pick a hotel that will pack breakfast for a 5 am start.
Leave Lachung by 6 am; cloud usually closes in on Yumthang by late morning.
Hire boots and coats in Lachung the evening before, not at dawn.
Do not pick rhododendrons or primulas; the valley is a protected sanctuary.
Carry your rubbish back to Lachung; bins at the stalls overflow in peak season.
Walk slowly: at 3,564 m even the flat meadow can leave you breathless.
