Autumn light and first snow in Yumthang
In late October and November the meadow turns gold, larch and maple colour the slopes, and the peaks carry their first snow under clear skies. Fewer visitors than in May, and the best light of the year for photographs.

Spring is Yumthang's famous season, but many photographers prefer autumn. After the monsoon clears, skies are at their sharpest from mid-October to November. The meadow grass dries to gold, larch needles turn yellow, and maples flush red on the slopes below the snowline. The peaks above the valley usually carry fresh snow by November.
Mornings are cold, often below zero, and the light is low and clean. Arrive by 7 am, when the sun first reaches the valley floor and frost is still on the grass. A polariser helps with the bright sky, and a spare battery is wise, since cold drains batteries fast.
Autumn is also the clearest season for the road beyond to Zero Point, though fresh snow can close it. Combine both if everyone feels well. Pack a down jacket, gloves and a warm cap, and keep a thermos of tea in the vehicle.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Is Yumthang worth visiting in October?
Yes. October has the clearest skies of the year and dry roads after the monsoon, with autumn colour building through the month. There are no rhododendrons, but views of the snow peaks are better than in spring. It is a busy holiday month, so book early.
How cold is Yumthang in November?
Expect around −5 to 8 °C, with frost and ice in the early morning and strong sun later. Wind makes it feel colder. Wear thermals, a down jacket, gloves, a cap and sunglasses, and carry lip balm and sunscreen.
Does Yumthang get snow in November?
The surrounding peaks usually have fresh snow by November, and light falls can reach the valley floor late in the month. Heavy snow on the meadow is more typical from December to March. Check current status before you travel.
