A natural hot spring near the river in Yumthang has long been used by local people for bathing. Stop to see it, warm your hands, and hear why Himalayan communities value these springs, while respecting local rules on bathing.

Yumthang's hot spring, noted in Wikipedia's article on the valley, lies near the river a short walk from the road. Across the Himalaya, Buddhist communities treat hot springs as places of healing, and some are linked with visits by Guru Padmasambhava. Here it is a practical, local spring that families have used for generations, especially in the cold months.
Facilities change from year to year, from simple enclosures to nothing at all, and flooding has altered the riverbanks in the past. We do not promise a bath: ask your driver on the day whether the spring is accessible and whether bathing is permitted. If it is, keep to any separate timings for men and women and leave no soap or rubbish.
For most visitors the hot spring is a short stop rather than a soak, since time at Yumthang is limited and wet hair at 3,564 m on a cold morning is no fun. Dip your hands, take in the steam rising against the snow, and move on to the meadow.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Can tourists bathe in the Yumthang hot spring?
Sometimes, depending on the state of the facilities and local rules that season. Bathing arrangements have changed over the years. Ask your driver on the day. If bathing is allowed, use separate timings where they apply, avoid soap and do not bathe if you feel unwell from the altitude.
Is the Yumthang hot spring worth the stop?
As a short stop, yes: it is a local landmark and a chance to warm your hands. Do not plan your morning around a long soak, though. Time at Yumthang is limited and cloud often arrives by late morning, so most visitors spend 15–30 minutes at the spring.
Is there a hot spring at Zero Point too?
Travellers report springs in the Yumesamdong area beyond Yumthang, but access depends on snow and army rules and changes from season to season. We do not count on it. Ask your driver whether the Yumesamdong area is open on the day.
