Questions travellers ask
Lachung to Yumthang Valley: questions
How far is Yumthang from Lachung?
About 24 km, which takes 1 to 1.5 hours on a mountain road climbing from about 2,700 m to about 3,564 m. Most drivers stop briefly in the rhododendron forest of the Shingba sanctuary. With Zero Point added, the full morning round trip from Lachung takes 5 to 6 hours.
Is Zero Point included in a Lachung package?
Usually not. Zero Point (Yumesamdong) is charged as an add-on, around ₹3,000–4,000 per vehicle as an indicative 2026 figure, paid to the driver or agent. Access depends on snow and army clearance. Foreign nationals: rules for Zero Point have varied, so ask us. Check current status before you travel.
When do rhododendrons bloom in Yumthang?
The main bloom runs from about late April to May, with early species from March and some flowers into June at higher levels. The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary protects many rhododendron species, Sikkim's state tree flower. A late spring snowfall can delay the season by a couple of weeks.
Is Yumthang open in winter?
Yumthang often receives heavy snow from December to March and the road can close for days at a time. When it opens, the snow-covered valley is beautiful but cold, around −5 to 5 °C. Zero Point is frequently unreachable in winter. Check current status before you travel and keep a flexible day.
