Rhododendron season at Yumthang
Drive up through the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary at dawn and spend the early hours in a valley flowering pink, red, white and yellow. The best way to see why Sikkim's rhododendrons drew Victorian botanists to this valley.

Rhododendron season is the reason many people come to North Sikkim in spring. The bloom climbs the valley over several weeks: lower forests flower first, around March and April, and higher slopes follow into May and early June. Late April to mid-May is usually the sweet spot at Yumthang itself, but the exact week depends on snow and temperature each year, and we check with drivers before you travel.
Ask your driver to stop in the Shingba forest on the way up, where tree rhododendrons arch over the road, and again at the edge of the meadow. Walk a few hundred metres off the road along the river for open views of flowering slopes against snow peaks. Morning light is softest before 9 am, and cloud often arrives by 10 or 11.
Please do not pick flowers or break branches. The valley is a protected sanctuary and its plants grow slowly at this height. Carry a light rain jacket, since spring showers are common, and warm layers: even in May, early mornings at Yumthang are close to freezing.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
When is peak rhododendron season at Yumthang?
Usually from late April to mid-May at the valley floor, with lower forests flowering from March and higher slopes into June. A cold spring or late snowfall can shift the peak by one or two weeks. We check with local drivers in April and can advise on the best dates.
How many rhododendron species grow around Yumthang?
The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary is home to dozens of species. Wikipedia gives about forty for the sanctuary, while the Yumthang article mentions over twenty-four, depending on the source. They include Rhododendron niveum, Sikkim's state tree. A local naturalist can point out several on a morning walk.
Is May too crowded at Yumthang?
May is the busiest month, with Indian school holidays and the bloom together. The valley is large, though, and an early start beats most crowds. Leave Lachung by 5:30 am and you will have an hour of quiet before the main wave of jeeps arrives around 8 am.
