Short answer

Several Lachungpa families take guests in their homes, with dinner and breakfast cooked in the family kitchen. It is the cheapest way to sleep in Lachung and the best way to understand a village run by its own Dzumsa council.

Lachung's people, the Lachungpas, are Bhutia families who still govern the village through the Dzumsa, an elected council headed by a Pipon. A number of households now let rooms, and staying with one means eating thukpa, local greens and butter tea by the kitchen stove rather than a hotel buffet, and hearing first-hand about apple orchards, yak herds and the winter move down the valley.

Rooms are simple, usually with an attached or shared bathroom and plenty of quilts. We match guests to families we have stayed with, and tell you honestly which have hot running water. Homestays still need a registered agent for permits and vehicle. Check current status before you travel.

Why we book it

What it does well

  • Meals cooked by a Lachungpa family, not a hotel kitchen
  • Half the price of most Lachung hotels
  • Close view of a village that runs itself through the Dzumsa

Questions travellers ask

Questions about Lachung family homestays

Are homestays allowed in Lachung for tourists?

Yes. Several Lachung families host guests, and some list on booking sites. You still need a protected area permit through a Sikkim Tourism-registered agent and a registered tourist vehicle, exactly as with a hotel. Local rules are set by the Dzumsa, the village council, and can change, so check current status before you travel.

What food do Lachung homestays serve?

Expect simple home cooking: rice, dal, seasonal vegetables, eggs or chicken, thukpa noodle soup, momos on request and butter or milk tea. Some families serve local greens and churpi (hard cheese). Vegetarian meals are easy. Tell us early about allergies, since the nearest large market is in Mangan, about two hours away.

Is a homestay warm enough in Lachung?

Usually yes, if you bring the right clothes. Families provide thick quilts, and the kitchen stove is the warmest room in the house. Few homestays have room heaters. From December to February we suggest thermals, a warm cap and socks for sleeping, or a comfort-tier hotel if anyone in your group struggles with cold.
