District by district: the weather, where we would go and what to watch for on the roads.
Short answer
August is a shoulder or off month across most of Sikkim. Avoid or plan carefully for East Sikkim, North Sikkim, West Sikkim, South Sikkim, Pakyong and the Silk Route, Soreng. Weather and road status change year to year: check current status before you travel.
Monsoon continues, with some clear breaks. Pang Lhabsol, Sikkim's festival of Kangchenjunga, may fall late in the month, with masked dances at the Tsuklakhang. Roads remain unreliable, and mountain views are rare. A trip built around the festival and Gangtok's monasteries can still work well.
Monsoon continues, with breaks of clear weather. Closures and permit suspensions are frequent: in 2026 the Lachen road was repaired only on 29 August. Day trips to Kabi Lungchok and Phodong remain the safest options. Pang Lhabsol falls in late August or September in Gangtok.
Still monsoon, with frequent rain and cloud. Fields around Darap and Hee Bermiok are deep green, and cardamom and paddy are growing, but slides and leeches make walking hard. Hotel rates are at their lowest. We suggest waiting for October unless your dates are fixed.
Still the monsoon, but culturally rich. Tendong Lho Rum Faat on 8 August sees Lepcha communities honour Tendong Hill, and in some years Pang Lhabsol, with cham at Ralang, falls in late August. Roads remain slow and slide-prone. Only come if a festival draws you, and travel with a local …
Still monsoon, with heavy rain and slides on most roads. Green paddy terraces at Aritar and Lingtam are at their brightest, and waterfalls on the Rorathang–Rongli road are full. Large cardamom harvest begins in some villages towards the end of the month. The Silk Route is possible on lucky days …
Still the monsoon, with rain most days and frequent cloud. Large cardamom harvest begins on the shaded slopes, and the forests are lush. Roads, including NH10, can close after slides. Drukpa Tshe-zi often falls in August. Unless you are visiting family or love rain, wait for October.
