About Rorathang

What to know before you go

Rorathang lies on the bank of the Rangpo river on National Highway 717A, about 12 km from Rangpo, 9 km from Rhenock, 14 km from Rongli and 19 km from Pakyong, according to Wikipedia. It sits in a river valley and is a busy small town, with industrial units in the area, including several pharmaceutical plants.

Roads join here from Rangpo through Kumrek, from Pakyong via Tareythang and Taza, and from Rongli via Mulukay. Wikipedia says taxi and jeep services run from Rorathang to Gangtok, Pakyong, Rhenock, Singtam, Rangpo, Rongli, Ranipool and Siliguri, with SNT buses on several routes. It is the practical transport junction for the lower Silk Route.

Few visitors sleep here. They stop for tea and momos, change vehicles or buy supplies. Pakyong Airport is about 11 km away by Wikipedia's figure, but there have been no scheduled flights since June 2024, so plan on Bagdogra (IXB) or NJP. Check current status of roads before you travel.

The story of Rorathang

Where three rivers meet

Wikipedia's article on Rorathang says the confluence of the Rangpo river with its tributaries, the Pachey and the Reshi, is at Rorathang. After the Rangpo meets the Reshi, it also marks the boundary between Sikkim and West Bengal, and villages of Kalimpong district can be reached from Rorathang after crossing the Reshi. The same article lists roads that join NH 717A here, which is why the town works as a junction. The Rangpo then runs on to Rangpo town and the Teesta. The article also says the town and surroundings are an important industrial hub of Sikkim, hosting several pharmaceutical companies, which explains the trucks and workers' buses on the road. For a traveller, the story is simple: this is where the valleys gather and the roads divide, one to the Silk Route, one to Aritar, one to Gangtok.
