The route
Where the road goes
This is the trip for students, solo travellers in pairs and anyone with more time than money. You see the whole sweep of Sikkim, from the snow of Yumthang in the north to the monasteries of the west and the great Buddha at Ravangla in the south, using the shared jeeps and government buses that carry Sikkim's own people between towns. We book every seat and room, and the North Sikkim permit, so you only have to turn up at the stand.
The order matters. You go north first, then to Tsomgo after two nights at 2,700 m, then west and down through Yuksom and Ravangla, finishing with a short run to Siliguri. Some days have walking: up to Pemayangtse and Rabdentse in Pelling and to Dubdi Monastery above Yuksom. Check current road and permit status before you travel.

The itinerary
-
Day 1: Shared jeep to Gangtok
Take a shared jeep from NJP or Siliguri, or the SNT bus from Siliguri, up NH10 through the Teesta valley and the Rangpo check post into Sikkim. In the monsoon NH10 closes after landslides, and the detour via Kalimpong and Lava adds two to four hours; check current road status before you travel. Send us scans of your ID and photos a week ahead for the North Sikkim permit. Check in near MG Marg, leave your big bag in the hotel store and pack light for Lachung.
About Gangtok -
Day 2: North to Lachung
Your shared North Sikkim vehicle leaves Gangtok at about 9–10 am to cross the Toong check post by its 4 pm deadline. The road passes Kabi Lungchok, Mangan and the Seven Sisters waterfall, then follows the Teesta gorge to Chungthang, where the Lachung and Lachen rivers meet. You reach Lachung, at about 2,700 m, in the late afternoon. Lachung is governed for many local matters by its traditional council, the Dzumsa. Dinner at your simple lodge and an early night.
About Lachung -
Day 3: Yumthang Valley
Leave after an early breakfast for Yumthang Valley, about 24 km away at 3,564 m, through the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, which flowers from late April to May. In winter the valley lies under snow. Zero Point, at roughly 4,700 m, is an optional add-on of about ₹2,000–3,500 per vehicle, shared among passengers and paid in Lachung, when the road is open. The afternoon is free for a walk through Lachung's apple orchards and up to the village monastery.
About Yumthang Valley -
Day 4: Back down to Gangtok
Drive back down the Lachung valley and the Teesta gorge after breakfast in your shared vehicle, with lunch near Mangan, reaching Gangtok by mid-afternoon. Collect your stored bag and give us your ID and two photos for tomorrow's Tsomgo permit. Spend the evening on MG Marg, where a bowl of thukpa costs under ₹200 and the street is free of cars. If you want laundry done, Gangtok is the place to do it before the west.
About Gangtok -
Day 5: Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir
With two nights at 2,700 m behind you, take your shared seat at about 7:30 am up past the 15th Mile check post and the Kyongnosla forest to Tsomgo Lake at 3,753 m, then on to Baba Mandir, the shrine to Sepoy Harbhajan Singh at about 4,000 m. Indian nationals can add Nathu La from Wednesday to Sunday for about ₹300–400 more. Back by about 4 pm. Book your morning jeep to Pelling at the counter this evening; we can do it for you.
About Tsomgo Lake -
Day 6: Shared jeep west to Pelling
The morning shared jeep to Pelling costs about ₹500–600 a seat and runs down through Ranipool and Singtam, then west and up through Legship and Gyalshing to Pelling at about 2,150 m. Check in to your budget hotel and ask for a mountain-facing room. In the late afternoon walk about 2 km up to Pemayangtse, the great Nyingma monastery traditionally dated to 1705, whose top floor holds a carved wooden model of Guru Rinpoche's heavenly palace, Zangdok Palri.
About Pelling -
Day 7: Rabdentse and Pelling on foot
On a clear morning from October to April, Kanchenjunga stands across the valley at dawn. After breakfast walk to the Rabdentse ruins, near Pemayangtse, where Sikkim's capital moved in 1670; a forest path leads to stone walls, courtyards and chortens. In the afternoon take a short shared taxi to the Chenrezig statue and glass skywalk at Sanga Choeling, or rest. Our team books tomorrow's jeep to Yuksom, which takes about 1.5–2 hours.
About Rabdentse Ruins -
Day 8: Yuksom and Norbugang
Take the shared jeep to Yuksom, about ₹150–250 a seat, past Kanchenjunga Falls. Yuksom, at about 1,780 m, was Sikkim's first capital: at Norbugang, a short walk from the village, a stone throne marks where three Nyingma lamas consecrated Phuntsog Namgyal as the first Chogyal in 1642. If your legs are willing, climb about 45 minutes through forest to Dubdi Monastery, traditionally dated to 1701. Yuksom is also the trailhead for the Dzongri and Goecha La trek, and its guest houses are full of trekkers.
About Yuksom -
Day 9: To Ravangla and the Buddha Park
Take a morning shared jeep from Yuksom to Legship, and change there for Ravangla, a ridge town at about 2,100 m; we write down the connection for you. In the afternoon walk to the Buddha Park, Tathagata Tsal, opened in 2013, where a large Buddha statue stands before the Maenam ridge. Entry is a small fee. On a clear evening the view runs across to the Kanchenjunga range. Ravangla is quiet and cool, a good last night after nine days on the road.
About Ravangla -
Day 10: Shared jeep to Siliguri
After an early breakfast take the morning shared jeep from Ravangla to Siliguri, which runs down through Damthang or Namchi and Melli to the Teesta and the plains. You reach Siliguri by early afternoon, a short auto or taxi ride from NJP station and about 30 minutes from Bagdogra. If your flight leaves before about 3 pm, stay the last night in Siliguri instead. In the monsoon allow extra time for landslides; check current road status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask
Questions about this trip
Is it safe to travel Sikkim by shared jeep?
Yes. Shared jeeps are the normal way people travel between towns in Sikkim, and drivers know the roads well. Sikkim is generally considered one of India's safer states for travellers. Keep valuables with you rather than in roof bags, sit in front if you get carsick, and avoid late-afternoon departures, which can arrive after dark.
Do you book the shared jeep seats for us?
Yes, wherever counters allow advance booking, which covers the main routes from Gangtok, Pelling and Ravangla. For the Yuksom to Legship and Legship to Ravangla legs, seats are often sold on the day; we tell you exactly where to wait and how much to pay. Our phone line is open throughout the trip.
Can a solo traveller book this trip?
Yes, at a higher per-person price, because rooms are priced for two. A single room adds roughly ₹6,000–8,000 over nine nights. Solo travellers are welcome on shared North Sikkim packages. Foreign solo travellers cannot get a protected area permit for Lachung, which requires a group of two or more.
How much walking is involved?
Moderate. Pelling to Pemayangtse is about 2 km uphill, Rabdentse is a short forest walk, and Dubdi Monastery above Yuksom is about 45 minutes of steady climbing. At Yumthang and Tsomgo you walk slowly at altitude. Good walking shoes and a light daypack are enough; no trekking experience is needed.
Can we do the Goecha La trek from Yuksom on this trip?
Not within these nine nights. The Dzongri and Goecha La trek starts at Yuksom but takes about 8–11 days with permits, guides and camps inside Khangchendzonga National Park. We can extend this trip into a trek with a registered trekking operator. Foreigners can trek it with a protected area permit in a group.
What is the Buddha Park at Ravangla?
Tathagata Tsal, known as the Buddha Park, is a Buddhist pilgrimage site and garden near Ravangla, opened in 2013, with a large Buddha statue standing before the Maenam ridge. It has a small entry fee and good paths, and on clear days views to the Kanchenjunga range. Allow an hour or two.
Which months are best for this circuit?
October to November for clear views, and March to May for rhododendrons in Yumthang and mild weather in the west. December to February is cold, with snow in the north and occasional closures above Lachung. June to September brings landslides that often disrupt North Sikkim and the Teesta roads, so we do not recommend it.
Can foreigners do this budget circuit?
Yes, in pairs or groups. Foreign nationals need the Sikkim Restricted Area Permit, applied for online on e-FRRO since 12 January 2026, and protected area permits for Lachung and Tsomgo, arranged by our registered agent for groups of two or more. Nathu La is not allowed. Check current rules before you travel.
What if we fall behind schedule?
We build the trip so that the permit days come early and the west is flexible. If Lachung is delayed, we shorten Pelling or skip Yuksom. If Tsomgo is closed, you go west a day earlier and add a night in Ravangla or Pelling. Changes are paid at the same budget rates, and we rebook jeep seats.
