Short answer

A small Tibet Road hotel that has been running since the early 1990s, a 10-minute walk from MG Marg. Rooms have balconies facing the valley, and its restaurant is known locally for a Sikkimese thali. Good value for travellers who want a view without paying view-hotel prices.

Tibet Road was the old start of the trade route north and east towards the passes, and it is still one of the best streets in Gangtok to stay on: high enough for views, close enough to walk to MG Marg in about 10 minutes. Hotel Sonam Delek has worked here since the early 1990s, which makes it one of the older family hotels on the road.

Rooms are compact with wooden floors, French windows and small private balconies; on a clear morning between October and March you can see the Kangchenjunga range from the upper floors. Breakfast is included. The restaurant is the reason many people stay: ask for the Sikkimese thali with gundruk soup and local greens. Expect steps, no lift in some wings and simple bathrooms.

Questions travellers ask

Questions about Hotel Sonam Delek

Can you see Kangchenjunga from Hotel Sonam Delek?

On clear days, yes, from the valley-facing rooms on the upper floors. Views are most reliable from October to early March, usually in the first two hours after sunrise. From June to September, monsoon cloud hides the range on most days, so do not pay extra for a view room in those months.

Is Hotel Sonam Delek close to the taxi stand?

It is about 10–15 minutes on foot from MG Marg and the private taxi stands around Paljor Stadium Road, mostly level or downhill on the way there. Shared jeeps for North Sikkim and for Siliguri leave from separate stands outside the centre, so you will need a short local taxi ride to reach them.

Does Hotel Sonam Delek serve Sikkimese food?

Yes. The restaurant is known for its Sikkimese thali, which usually includes rice, dal, seasonal greens, gundruk (fermented leafy greens) soup and pickles. Order it a few hours ahead if you can, as some dishes are made in small batches. It is an easy, honest introduction to local food.
