Crossroads market, banks and ATMs, route to Aritar
Rhenock sits at Charfatak, where National Highway 717A, which Wikipedia says connects Bagrakote to Gangtok, meets the spur of NH 717B that runs on to Rongli, Zuluk and Menla. It lies close to the border with Kalimpong district, so it is also the market town for a ring of villages on the Bengal side. Taxis run daily to Kalimpong, Pedong, Algarah, Rongli and Rangpo.
The town is about 9 km from Rorathang and, by the guide's figure, about 10 km from Aritar. Wikipedia lists Pakyong Airport as 31 km away, and no scheduled flights have run since June 2024. For most visitors Rhenock is a stop for money, tea and momos, but when NH10 is shut after monsoon slides the road via Kalimpong, Pedong and Reshi brings you through it.
Wikipedia's history describes the Lepchas as early settlers some five or six hundred years ago, Bhutias moving down from Tibet in the mid-sixteenth century and a mixture of Nepali-speaking communities settling later. Check current status of roads before you travel.
Highlights
What to see and do
Bazaar and banks
Rhenock is the main shopping and banking stop between Rangpo and the Silk Route. ATMs here can run out, so carry spare cash, and ask before photographing stalls.
Crossroads of roads
Roads branch here to Aritar, Rongli, Rorathang and Pedong, with taxis to Kalimpong and Gangtok. If NH10 is shut, this is the way in.
Momo and tea stops
Small eateries serve momos, noodles and thali at roughly ₹120–250. Eat where it is busy and carry sanitiser.
Private nursery and museum
Wikipedia mentions a privately owned nursery and museum at the bazaar with driftwood and flower collections. Check whether it is open and ask before entering.
Settlement history
Lepcha, Bhutia and Nepali-speaking communities share the town. Ask politely at shops about local festivals rather than assuming, and respect each community's customs.
The story of Rhenock
Who settled Rhenock
Wikipedia's article on Rhenock gives a short settlement history. It says the area was covered in dense forest around the thirteenth century, that Lepchas were the early settlers five or six hundred years ago, and that Bhutias who had migrated from Tibet in the mid-sixteenth century settled in villages now known as Kyongsa, Aritar, Tarpin, Reshi and Chalisey. Later settlers were Nepali-speaking groups, among them Newars, Bahuns, Chhetris, Gurungs, Rais and Limbus. The article says the Lepchas were originally followers of shamanism before turning to Buddhism, and that some are now Christian; Bhutias are Buddhist; and most Nepalis are Hindu, with some Buddhist and Christian. It adds that people respect each other's faiths and celebrate each other's festivals. Treat this as Wikipedia's summary rather than a full history. The road through town was also a stage on the Kalimpong route to Jelep La, which Wikipedia says passed through Rongli, Rhenock and Pedong.

Permits in Pakyong and the Silk Route
The upper Silk Route beyond Rongli, including Lingtam, Padamchen, Zuluk, Thambi View Point, Nathang and Kupup, is a protected area open to Indian nationals only. The permit is processed at Rongli for named people, dates and a vehicle, usually through a registered agent, driver or homestay; carry original photo ID, copies and two passport photos. Foreign nationals, including OCI holders, are not allowed beyond Rongli, but Aritar, Mankhim, Rhenock, Rorathang, Rangpo and Pakyong town need only the general Sikkim entry permit. For Rolep, ask us. Check current status before you travel.
Few travellers sleep in Rhenock itself. A handful of small lodges exist near the bazaar at roughly ₹1,000–2,000 a room, though we do not name them. Better to stay at Aritar, 10 km away, in lakeside homestays or at Lampokhari Village Resort, or at Pakyong's Vivanta for comfort. If you must stay, book ahead in October and around Durga Puja.
