About Rangpo

What to know before you go

Rangpo is a municipal town shared between Pakyong district in Sikkim and Kalimpong district in West Bengal, on the border formed by the Rangpo river. It is the first town of Sikkim on National Highway 10, which links Siliguri to Gangtok, and Wikipedia says all vehicles entering Sikkim have to stop at the Rangpo police check-post. Foreign tourists must present their documents here.

At about 333 m it is hot and humid in summer and a gateway rather than a destination. Roads branch to Rorathang and Rongli, to Namchi via Namthang and to Kalimpong via Munsoong. Wikipedia lists shared jeeps and SNT buses to Gangtok, Siliguri and NJP, with Bagdogra about 90 km away.

The Teesta and Rangpo meet below the town, and both rivers rise fast in the monsoon from June to September. NH10 can close after landslides, and the Sevoke to Rangpo railway is not open, with completion targeted for December 2027. Check current status before you travel.

Highlights

What to see and do

The check post

All vehicles entering Sikkim stop here, and foreign tourists show documents. Carry photo ID for everyone. Expect a short queue on weekends and holidays.

Where two rivers meet

The Teesta and the Rangpo meet below the town. Both rise quickly in the monsoon, so view from a safe place on the bank and do not go near the edge.

Maghe Sankranti on the riverbank

In mid-January, around the first day of Magh, families come to bathe and share winter foods at river confluences. Visit as a guest and ask before photographing.

Road junction

Roads branch to Rorathang and Rongli, to Namchi and to Kalimpong. Shared jeeps and SNT buses link Rangpo with Gangtok, Siliguri and NJP.

Supplies stop

Banks, ATMs and shops line the highway. Fill water and cash here before heading to Aritar, Rongli or Gangtok.

The story of Rangpo

The gateway and the two rivers

Wikipedia's article on Rangpo says the town lies on the belt of two rivers: the Teesta, coming from the Dikchu, Singtam and Majitar side, and the Rangpo, coming from Rongli, Rorathang and Kumrek. They meet below the town at a spot called Rangpo Doban. The article calls the Teesta the largest river of Sikkim and the Rangpo the third largest, and warns that both become violent between June and September, sometimes flooding the lower town. It also says the Rangpo river separates the Rangpo Forest Village on the West Bengal side from the municipal town on the Sikkim side. That is why the place works as a gateway: the highway enters Sikkim along river valleys, and vehicles must stop at the check post. The town's riverbanks also draw families for the Maghe Sankranti bath in mid-January, when people gather at river confluences.
