Chopta Valley is a high, open meadow at about 4,000 m along the Lachen river near Thangu, about 30–35 km above Lachen. It flowers in summer and turns white and icy in winter. Visited as a short add-on on the Gurudongmar trip when permitted, it is also a gentler alternative for those not going to the lake.

About Chopta Valley
What to know before you go
Chopta is a broad stretch of the upper Lachen valley just beyond Thangu, where the river runs through flat meadow between steep, bare slopes. In summer the grass is green and full of alpine flowers, yaks graze, and the river runs clear. In winter the meadow lies under snow and the river edges freeze, a landscape that looks closer to the Tibetan plateau than the forested valleys below.
Most travellers see Chopta for a few minutes from the vehicle on the way to or from Gurudongmar. Some drivers offer a short detour into the valley on the return, for about ₹1,500–2,500 per vehicle, but whether it is allowed depends on army and permit rules that day. We treat it as a welcome extra, never a fixed part of the plan.
At about 4,000 m, Chopta is high, though about 1,150–1,400 m lower than Gurudongmar. For families with older parents or travellers who do not feel well enough for the lake, a gentle hour at Chopta can be the better choice: big views, fewer risks. Walk slowly, keep warm and stay at the road edge.
Highlights
What to see and do
Open meadow by the river
A rare flat valley floor in Sikkim's steep mountains, with the Lachen river winding through. In clear weather the slopes and peaks above make it one of the most open landscapes in the state.
Summer flowers
From late May into July, primulas and other alpine flowers spread across the meadow and slopes. The monsoon season makes roads unreliable, so late May and early June are the safer bet.
Winter ice
From late autumn the river edges freeze and snow covers the meadow. Access depends on the Gurudongmar road being open, which is often not the case in midwinter.
Yaks on the slopes
Herds graze in and around Chopta in the warmer months. Keep a distance, never feed them, and ask herders before taking photographs.
A gentler alternative
For travellers not going to Gurudongmar, a short visit to Chopta offers high-country scenery at a lower altitude, if permitted on the day.
The story of Chopta Valley
Hooker's road to the Tibetan passes
In 1849 the British botanist Joseph Dalton Hooker travelled up the Lachen valley, past the place he called Tungu, now Thangu, towards the high passes on the Tibetan frontier. His Himalayan Journals, published in 1854, describe the change from forest to open, wind-scoured pasture above Thangu, the yak herders, and the plants he collected in the alpine meadows, among them primulas, saxifrages and dwarf rhododendrons. Wikipedia's article on Tso Lhamo notes that Hooker referred to that lake as Cholamoo, and his route took him into the high country beyond Chopta. He was there as a scientist, and his journals, though written from a colonial viewpoint, remain one of the earliest detailed descriptions of the upper Lachen valley and its people. Today the valley Hooker walked through is crossed by the road to Gurudongmar, and much of the country beyond is restricted. Chopta is where you can still stand in the kind of meadow he described: open grass, cold wind, herds on the slopes, and snow peaks close above.

Little known
Things most visitors never hear
Wikipedia often pairs the names as Thangu-Chopta Valley, since the Chopta meadows begin just beyond Thangu village on the Lachen river.
Source: Wikipedia, Thangu Valley
Chopta lies at roughly 13,000–13,100 ft (about 4,000 m), more than 1,100 m below the official altitude figure for Gurudongmar Lake.
Source: Wikipedia, Lachen, Sikkim; travel sources
Wikipedia describes Chopta as rich in alpine flora and rhododendrons, with rivers and grazing grounds used by herders of the Lachen valley.
Ask your driver about a Chopta detour on the Gurudongmar trip, usually on the way back. It costs about ₹1,500–2,500 per vehicle when allowed.
Private car
In a private registered SUV arranged through an agent, request Chopta in advance; the driver still needs permission on the day.
From Bagdogra / NJP
Drive to Gangtok (4.5–5 hours by NH10, or via Kalimpong when NH10 is closed), stay a night, go to Lachen the next day and visit Chopta on the following morning's Gurudongmar trip.
Permits in North Sikkim
Indian travellers need a protected area permit for Lachung, Yumthang, Zero Point, Lachen, Thangu and Gurudongmar, issued only through Sikkim Tourism-registered agents and tied to a registered tourist vehicle; operators require a minimum two-night stay. Dzongu needs its own permit, usually obtained in Mangan. Children under five are not permitted in North Sikkim protected areas. Foreign nationals need the online Sikkim restricted area permit and may visit Lachung, Yumthang and Zero Point on a group permit, but not Gurudongmar; for Lachen and Thangu, ask us. Check current status before you travel.
There is no tourist accommodation in Chopta Valley. Stay in Lachen, about 30–35 km below, and visit on the Gurudongmar morning. Budget travellers can choose a Lachenpa family homestay with an early breakfast; Summit Gangchen is the comfort choice, with heated beds. Thangu has very basic lodging, but sleeping at about 3,900 m without acclimatisation is not advisable for most visitors.
Ask about the Chopta detour the night before so your driver can plan for it.
Stay on the road edge or obvious paths; the meadow is fragile.
Keep stops short in wind; it is colder than it looks.
Do not photograph army installations in or near the valley.
If you skip Gurudongmar, ask whether a Chopta-only visit is permitted that day.

Chopta Valley is at 4,000 m. Spend a night lower down first, climb slowly and drink water. Headache, nausea or breathlessness at rest mean go down. The altitude ladder.
Chopta Valley is in the upper Lachen valley in Mangan district (North Sikkim), just beyond Thangu and about 30–35 km above Lachen, on the road to Gurudongmar Lake. It should not be confused with Chopta in Uttarakhand, a separate place.
What is the altitude of Chopta Valley?
About 4,000 m (13,000–13,100 ft). It is a little higher than Thangu and more than 1,100 m below the official altitude figure for Gurudongmar Lake, so it is a gentler stop for most visitors.
Do I need a permit for Chopta Valley?
Yes. It falls within the protected area covered by the Lachen and Gurudongmar permit, arranged through a registered agent with a registered vehicle. Whether vehicles may enter the valley itself depends on rules that day. Check current status before you travel.
What is the best time to visit Chopta Valley?
Late May to June for flowers with reasonably open roads, and October to November for clear skies and the first ice. July and August bring the most flowers but the worst roads. December to March often sees the road closed by snow.
How much does the Chopta Valley add-on cost?
Indicatively, about ₹1,500–2,500 per vehicle in 2026, paid to the driver or agent, when the detour is allowed. Agree the price before setting out from Lachen. Check current status before you travel.
Can foreigners visit Chopta Valley?
Rules for foreign nationals in Lachen and Thangu are unclear at present, and Chopta lies beyond Thangu. Foreigners are not permitted at Gurudongmar. Ask us before planning any foreign traveller's trip on the Lachen side.
Is there anywhere to stay in Chopta?
No. There is no tourist accommodation in the valley. Stay in Lachen and visit on the Gurudongmar morning. Thangu nearby has very basic lodging, but sleeping at that height without acclimatisation is not advisable.
Are there yaks in Chopta Valley?
Yes, often in the warmer months, when herders bring yak and sheep to the high pastures. Sightings are likely from May to November but not guaranteed. Keep a distance, do not feed the animals and ask before photographing herders.
Is Chopta Valley worth it?
If permitted, yes, especially as a calm stop after Gurudongmar or as an alternative for anyone not going to the lake. It is not a destination in itself for most travellers, since there is no accommodation and visits are short.
