Short answer

Lachenpa families in the old village above the road host guests in wooden and stone houses, with dinner and an early breakfast. A low-cost, personal alternative to Lachen's package hotels, best for travellers who do not need room heaters.

Lachen, like Lachung, is governed by its own Dzumsa, the traditional council headed by an elected Pipon, and its people have close links with the Dokpa yak herders of the high pastures towards Thangu and beyond. A family homestay is the simplest way to hear about that life: the summer move of herds, the winter move down to lower villages, and how the 2023 and 2024 floods and slides changed the valley.

Rooms are basic but clean, with heavy quilts. Hosts are used to cooking breakfast at 3:30 am for Gurudongmar starts. Hot water may be by bucket. We place guests only with families we know, and a registered agent and vehicle are still required. Check current status before you travel.

Why we book it

What it does well

  • Lowest-cost night in Lachen with home-cooked food
  • Hosts who know the Dzumsa and the high pastures first-hand
  • Early breakfasts for Gurudongmar are routine

Questions travellers ask

Questions about Lachen family homestays

Are there homestays in Lachen?

Yes. A number of Lachen families host guests, alongside the village's hotels. Lachen is small and opens and closes with the road, so availability is limited. You still need a protected area permit and a registered tourist vehicle arranged by a Sikkim Tourism-registered agent. Check current status before you travel.

How cold is a Lachen homestay?

Lachen sits at about 2,750 m. In October–November nights fall close to 0 °C, and from December to February well below. Homestays usually have thick quilts but no room heater. Sleep in thermals and a cap, keep a water bottle inside your quilt so it does not freeze, and choose a hotel if anyone in your group is very sensitive to cold.

Can we see yaks from Lachen?

Usually yes, but higher up rather than in the village. Yaks graze around Thangu, Chopta Valley and the road to Gurudongmar, tended by Dokpa and Lachenpa herders, and you often pass herds on the drive. Ask before photographing herders or their camps, keep a distance from the animals, and never feed them.
