An hour in the Chopta meadow
On the way back from Gurudongmar, if permitted, turn into Chopta Valley for a slow walk by the Lachen river through open meadow, with yaks on the slopes and snow peaks above. A calmer, lower coda to the morning.

After the cold, windy hour at Gurudongmar, Chopta feels gentle. The road drops back towards Thangu, and a short detour leads into the meadow where the Lachen river winds through grass. Step out, breathe, and walk slowly along the bank. The altitude here is about 4,000 m, so you will still feel it, but much less than at the lake.
In summer the meadow is green and flowering; in October and November it turns gold and brown under clear skies; in winter it may be white with snow and edged with ice. Yaks often graze nearby. Watch from a distance and keep children close.
Whether the detour is allowed depends on rules that day. Ask your driver the night before and agree the cost. If it is not possible, the view of Chopta from the main road on the way down is still worth a short stop.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Is Chopta Valley included in the Gurudongmar trip?
Usually not as a full stop. You pass the valley on the main road, and some drivers offer a short detour for about ₹1,500–2,500 per vehicle. Whether it is allowed depends on army and permit rules that day. Ask the night before.
How long do we get at Chopta?
Typically 30 minutes to an hour on the way back from Gurudongmar. Drivers need to return to Lachen for lunch and continue to Lachung or Gangtok, so the stop is short. A private vehicle allows a little more flexibility.
Is Chopta easier on altitude than Gurudongmar?
Yes, it is about 4,000 m, more than 1,100 m lower than the lake. Most people feel better there. It is still high, so walk slowly and keep warm, and descend if someone feels seriously unwell.
