Snow and ice in Chopta Valley
From late autumn, snow covers the Chopta meadows and ice forms along the Lachen river. When the Gurudongmar road is open, the white valley under clear November skies is one of North Sikkim's starkest and most beautiful scenes.

As temperatures drop in late October and November, Chopta changes quickly. Frost whitens the grass at dawn, the river edges freeze, and the first snowfalls cover the meadow. Clear post-monsoon skies make the colours sharp: blue sky, white snow, brown slopes.
Access depends on the Gurudongmar road. In November it is usually open, though cold; from December snow often closes it. Lachen trips may be cancelled at short notice, so treat winter Chopta as a bonus if it happens.
Dress for well below freezing with wind: thermals, a down jacket, cap, gloves and sunglasses. Ice near the river is slippery and unstable, so stay on solid ground and never walk onto frozen water.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Does the river in Chopta freeze?
The edges and slower stretches often freeze from late autumn through winter, and the meadow is covered in snow. The main current may keep flowing. Never walk on river ice; it is thin and unpredictable.
Is Chopta open in winter?
Only when the Gurudongmar road is open, which is often not the case from December to March due to snow. November is usually the last reliable month. Check current status before you travel.
How cold is Chopta in November?
Mornings are often −10 °C or colder with wind, and days stay below freezing in shade. Sun makes it feel warmer briefly. Wear full winter clothing and limit time outside the vehicle.
