Chopta for those not going to the lake
If a family member is too young, too unwell or simply not keen on 5,000 m, Chopta and Thangu make a sensible alternative morning: high-country scenery and fresh air at about 3,900–4,000 m, with a much lower risk of altitude sickness.

Gurudongmar is not for everyone. Older parents, people with heart or lung conditions, or anyone who felt unwell in Lachen may be better off stopping lower. Chopta and Thangu give much of the same feeling of leaving the forest for open, high country, without the final climb above 5,000 m.
In a private vehicle you can plan this from the start: a later start from Lachen, breakfast at Thangu, an hour in Chopta, and back to Lachen. In a shared jeep, the person can wait at Thangu and visit Chopta on the return if the driver allows the detour.
Permission for Chopta depends on rules that day, so confirm with your agent in advance. Whatever the plan, follow the same altitude care: water, warmth, a light meal and a slow pace.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Can we visit only Chopta and not Gurudongmar?
Sometimes, in a private vehicle, if permits and army rules allow it that day. Ask your agent when booking. In shared jeeps, the group goes to Gurudongmar, so an unwell traveller usually waits at Thangu instead.
Is Chopta suitable for senior citizens?
More so than Gurudongmar, since it is much lower. Seniors in reasonable health usually manage a short, gentle visit. Consult a doctor first if you have heart, lung or blood pressure conditions, and keep the stop short and warm.
Can children visit Chopta Valley?
Children aged five and over can, with care; children under five are not permitted in North Sikkim protected areas. For children who may struggle at Gurudongmar, Chopta is a lower, gentler alternative. Watch for headache or vomiting.
