Lachen is a short night: you arrive in the late afternoon from Gangtok and leave around 4 to 5 am for Gurudongmar Lake. That makes a warm bed and an early breakfast worth paying for. Summit Gangchen, which the group describes as the largest hotel in Lachen, offers electrically heated beds, a restaurant and parking, and its staff are used to Gurudongmar timings.
Lachen reopened to tourists in stages in 2025–26 after long closures, and capacity is still limited, so book early. At about 2,750 m, Lachen is the night that prepares your body for 5,000 m the next morning: drink water, eat light and sleep early. Check current status before you travel.

Is Lachen open for tourists in 2026?
As we understand it, Lachen and Gurudongmar reopened on 9 March 2026, closed again in April after a landslide, and the road was repaired by 29 August 2026, with permits resuming around 11–12 September 2026. Openings depend on weather and road work, so check current status before you travel. We confirm every Lachen booking a few days before departure.
Why stay at a better hotel in Lachen?
Because you sleep only a few hours. Most Gurudongmar trips leave Lachen between 4 and 5 am, reach the lake at about 5,150–5,430 m around 8 to 9 am, and return to Lachen or drive on to Lachung. A heated bed and a reliable early breakfast help you rest and acclimatise, which reduces headaches at the lake.
Can foreigners stay at Summit Gangchen in Lachen?
The rules for foreign nationals in Lachen and Thangu are unclear at present, and foreigners are not allowed to Gurudongmar Lake. Foreigners can usually visit Lachung, Yumthang and Zero Point with a protected area permit through a registered agent, in a group of two or more. Ask us before you plan Lachen.
