The route
Where the road goes
This is the trip most first-time visitors to North Sikkim take, and the cheapest honest way to do it. You buy a seat in a registered North Sikkim SUV that leaves Gangtok mid-morning with other travellers, so the vehicle cost is split six ways. The permit, a clean budget lodge in Lachung, dinner and breakfast are bundled. You see Yumthang Valley, the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary and Lachung village, and you are back in Gangtok on the third evening with a night's sleep before heading down.
It suits solo travellers, young couples and groups of friends who do not mind a fixed timetable and a shared vehicle. It is not the trip for families with seniors, for whom the back benches and long drive days are hard; see our value trips instead. Children under 5 are not permitted in North Sikkim, and the operator rules expect at least two nights up north, which this trip meets. Check current status before you travel.

The itinerary
-
Day 1: Gangtok to Lachung by shared SUV
Report to the North Sikkim taxi stand at Vajra in Gangtok by 9 am with your ID and the permit copy we send the night before. Seats are allotted by the driver; ask for a middle row if you are prone to car sickness. The road runs past Kabi, the Seven Sisters Waterfall and Phodong, with lunch, at your own cost, near Mangan. The vehicle must cross the Toong check post by 4 pm. Reach Lachung in the late afternoon, check in, and hire snow boots or a coat for the morning if needed. Dinner at the lodge.
About Lachung -
Day 2: Yumthang Valley at dawn
Leave Lachung at about 6 to 6:30 am, before the cloud builds. The road climbs 24 km through the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary to Yumthang Valley at 3,564 m, a wide meadow with the river running through it and yaks grazing in season. Spend an hour walking slowly, have tea at the stalls and look at the hot spring by the river. Zero Point, another 23 km up at about 4,700 m, is optional and paid in Lachung, roughly ₹3,000–4,000 per vehicle shared among the group. Back in Lachung by lunch; afternoon at leisure. Dinner at the lodge.
About Yumthang Valley -
Day 3: Lachung monastery and back to Gangtok
After an early breakfast, walk up to Lachung Monastery on the slope across the river if the group timing allows, or simply wander the village lanes between wooden houses and apple trees. The shared vehicle leaves for Gangtok by about 8:30 am and retraces the North Sikkim highway, with a tea stop at the Naga Waterfall and lunch near Mangan at your own cost. Reach Gangtok in the mid-afternoon, check in to a budget hotel near MG Marg, and spend the evening on the promenade. Dinner on your own.
About Gangtok -
Day 4: Shared jeep down to Siliguri
Walk or take a local taxi to the Gangtok shared jeep stand and take a morning jeep to Siliguri, about 4.5 to 5 hours, from where autos and taxis run to NJP station and Bagdogra Airport. Leave by 8 am if you have an afternoon flight or train. NH10 between Rangpo and Sevoke closes after slides in the monsoon; when it does, jeeps go via Kalimpong or Lava and take 1.5 to 3 hours longer, so keep a margin. We can book a private car instead for about ₹3,500–4,500 for the vehicle.

Questions travellers ask
Questions about this trip
Is this a shared or private trip?
Shared. You buy a seat in a registered North Sikkim SUV, usually a Bolero, Sumo or Scorpio, with up to five or six other travellers. The permit, Lachung lodge and meals are bundled. The timetable is fixed and the lodge is chosen by the operator from our approved list. For a private vehicle, see our value trips.
Can I do Lachung in one night?
Not at present. Operators currently require a minimum of 2 nights in North Sikkim, and most agents are not issuing single-night permits. Two nights also make sense on the ground, because the drive from Gangtok takes 5 to 7 hours and Yumthang is best seen in the early morning. Check current status before you travel.
Is Zero Point included?
No. Zero Point, about 23 km beyond Yumthang at around 4,700 m, is an optional extension of roughly ₹3,000–4,000 per vehicle, shared by everyone who wants to go, paid in Lachung the evening before. It depends on snow and ice on the day, and is often closed in January and February.
What time does the shared vehicle leave Gangtok?
Usually between 9 and 10:30 am from the North Sikkim stand at Vajra, once the permit and all passengers are ready. Vehicles must cross the Toong check post by 4 pm, so departures later than about 11 am are not allowed. Be at the stand by 9 am with ID and the permit copy we send.
What are the Lachung lodges like?
Simple and clean. Expect a double or twin room with an attached bathroom, a blanket and often an electric blanket, hot water by geyser or bucket in the morning, and set dinner and breakfast of rice, dal, vegetables, egg or chicken. Power cuts happen. Some trips use a Lachungpa homestay instead, with home-cooked meals.
When is the best time for this trip?
Mid-April to May for rhododendrons in Yumthang, October and November for clear skies, and December to March for snow, when Zero Point may close. March and late November are the best value. We do not recommend July and August, when landslides often stop permits.
Can a solo traveller book this trip?
Yes, the shared format is ideal for solo travellers. You pay for one seat and share a room with another traveller of the same sex if available, or pay a single supplement of about ₹1,500–2,500 for the two Lachung nights. Foreign solo travellers need to join a PAP group of at least two.
What should I pack for Lachung?
Thermals, a fleece, a padded jacket, a woollen cap, gloves, sunglasses and shoes with grip. Even in May, dawn at Yumthang can be near freezing. Carry ID, cash for snow gear and Zero Point, a refillable bottle, motion sickness tablets and your regular medicines. Snow boots and coats can be hired in Lachung.
What happens if the road to Lachung closes?
If permits are suspended before you leave Gangtok, we refund the North Sikkim portion or move you to another date or trip such as Tsomgo Lake. If a slide holds the vehicle in Lachung, extra lodge nights are charged at cost, about ₹1,500–2,500 per person with meals. Keep a spare day before your onward travel.
