A snow day in Lachung

In midwinter Lachung often lies under snow, and the village becomes the destination when Yumthang and Zero Point are closed. Walk, play in the snow with children over five, and warm up by a stove. Pack properly and keep a buffer day.

From late December to February Lachung usually has snow on the ground for at least part of the season, and fresh falls cover the roofs, orchards and road. For many Indian families it is their first real snow, and it is often easier to enjoy here, at about 2,700 m, than at Zero Point, where cold and altitude bite hard. Daytime temperatures are around 0–8 °C and nights fall to about −5 °C.

Snow also closes roads. Yumthang may be shut for days, Zero Point is often out of reach, and the drive from Gangtok can be delayed by ice beyond Chungthang. We plan winter trips with an extra night and tell you honestly when a road is closed. A slow day in the village, with a walk to the monastery and an evening by the stove, can be the best part of the trip.

Hire snow boots and a long coat in Lachung, and bring thermals, gloves, a cap, sunglasses and lip balm. Children under five are not permitted in North Sikkim protected areas, so winter Lachung is for families with older children only.

Questions travellers ask

Before you book

Is there snow in Lachung in December?

Often, but not every year in early December. Snow is most reliable from late December to February, with fresh falls possible into March. If seeing snow is the main goal, January is the safest bet, though road closures are also most likely then. Check current status before you travel.

Is Lachung open in winter?

The village is inhabited and hotels stay open, but roads can close after heavy snow, sometimes for a few days. Yumthang and especially Zero Point are frequently unreachable in midwinter. Plan an extra night, buy flexible tickets, and check current status before you travel.

What should we pack for Lachung in winter?

Thermal innerwear, a down or heavy jacket, woollen cap, gloves, warm socks, waterproof shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm. Boots and long coats can be hired in Lachung. Carry basic medicines, a refillable bottle and a torch, since power cuts are common in snow.
