Morning walk to Lachung Monastery

Cross the Lachung Chu on foot and climb to the village's Nyingma monastery, founded in 1880, for morning prayers and a view back over the roofs and orchards. A gentle way to adjust to 2,700 m on a rest morning.

Lachung Monastery sits on the slope across the river from the main road. From most hotels it is a 20–30 minute walk down to the footbridge and a short, steady climb up the other side. Go slowly: even fit visitors feel the altitude on the first morning. On the way you pass houses with stacked firewood, prayer wheels and small fields, the everyday Lachung that most tourists see only through a jeep window.

The monastery belongs to the Nyingma school, the oldest of the Tibetan Buddhist traditions and the one most closely linked with Guru Padmasambhava in Sikkim. It was established in 1880. If monks are at prayer, wait outside or sit quietly at the back. Walk clockwise around the building and any chortens, take off shoes and hats inside, and ask before taking photographs.

This walk fits best on your second morning in Lachung, after Yumthang, or on a buffer day when snow closes the road. A local guide can explain the murals and the village's links with the monastery, and point out the annual masked dance date if your trip comes close to it.

Questions travellers ask

Before you book

How far is Lachung Monastery from the hotels?

From most hotels on the main road it is a 20–30 minute walk down to the footbridge and up the other side, or a short drive round by road. The path is uneven in places and icy in winter, so wear proper shoes. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the walk and a quiet visit.

Can visitors enter Lachung Monastery?

Respectful visitors are generally welcome when the monastery is open. Remove shoes and hats, walk clockwise, keep your voice low and do not touch altars or offerings. Photography inside may not be allowed. If the doors are shut, admire the outside and the view, and do not try to enter.

When is the Lachung Monastery mask dance?

The monastery holds an annual masked dance, and its date follows the Tibetan lunar calendar, so it shifts each year in the Gregorian calendar. We do not publish a fixed date because it changes. Ask us when you plan, and check current status before you travel.
