Orchards and lanes of old Lachung

Walk the lanes between old wooden houses, apple orchards and potato fields with a local guide, and see how a high village feeds itself in a short summer. Blossom in April, fruit in autumn, and views up the valley towards Yumthang.

The road through Lachung shows mostly hotels. Behind them, the older village climbs the slopes in clusters of wooden and stone houses with carved windows, prayer flags and woodpiles. A guide from the village knows which paths are public and which cross private fields, and can introduce you to neighbours along the way. Two hours is enough for a gentle loop without a hard climb.

Apples are Lachung's best-known crop. Trees blossom in April and fruit is picked from late summer into autumn, depending on the year. Potatoes, barley, cabbage and other hardy vegetables fill the rest of the short growing season. Ask about how families divide work between fields, herds and now tourism, and how the Dzumsa sets rules for shared land.

Please stay on paths, do not pick fruit, and ask before photographing people or houses. On a clear morning the walk gives you a fine view up the valley, and in October the larch and maple on the slopes turn yellow and red.

Questions travellers ask

Before you book

When do apples blossom and ripen in Lachung?

Blossom usually comes in April, sometimes into early May after a cold spring. Fruit ripens from late summer into autumn, roughly August to October depending on altitude and the year. Orchards are private, so admire from the path and buy fruit only when a family offers it.

Do we need a guide for a village walk in Lachung?

You can stroll the main road alone, but for the older lanes and orchards a local guide is better. Many paths cross private land, and a guide can introduce you and explain what you see. Expect to pay about ₹500–1,000 for two hours. We can arrange one through your hotel or homestay.

Is the Lachung village walk hard?

No, it is gentle, with some uneven paths and short slopes. At 2,700 m you will breathe harder than at home, so walk slowly and take breaks. It suits most ages, including fit seniors. Wear shoes with grip, since paths are muddy after rain and icy in winter.
