Day hike into the park towards Sachen

Walk the first stretch of the Goecha La trail from Yuksom into Khangchendzonga National Park, through forest and across streams above the Prek Chu, and return the same day.

The Dzongri and Goecha La trail leaves the top of Yuksom and enters Khangchendzonga National Park, India's first UNESCO mixed World Heritage Site. The first stage climbs gently through subtropical and temperate forest along the Prek Chu valley, crossing side streams on bridges and passing waterfalls.

A day hike to a viewpoint or bridge before Sachen and back takes 4–5 hours. Even this short walk needs the park's entry formalities at Yuksom, and we arrange it with a registered guide, who also knows where the trail is safe after rain.

It is the best way to see the park's lower forest without committing to an 8–10 day trek. Look for birds, orchids and ferns, carry water and a rain jacket, and be back in Yuksom by mid-afternoon.

Questions travellers ask

Before you book

Can I do a day hike from Yuksom without the full trek permit?

Short walks into the park still need registration and fees at the Yuksom check post, and rules now expect a registered guide. Requirements change, so check current status before you travel. We arrange day hikes with a licensed local guide and handle the paperwork.

How difficult is the first stage of the Goecha La trail?

The first few kilometres from Yuksom are moderate: a steady climb on a well-used trail with some steep sections and streams. Fit walkers manage a 4–5 hour return comfortably. The trail is muddy and leech-infested in the monsoon.

What will I see on a day hike from Yuksom?

Mixed forest of oak, chestnut and later rhododendron, waterfalls, suspension bridges over side streams and views down to the Prek Chu gorge. Birdlife is rich in the morning. You will not see Kangchenjunga closely on a day hike; that needs the full trek to Dzongri.
