Prepare for Goecha La in Yuksom

Spend a day in Yuksom before the Goecha La trek: complete permits with your agency, check gear, meet porters or yak and dzo handlers, and take a short acclimatisation walk to Dubdi.

Yuksom is where every Dzongri and Goecha La trek begins. Your registered trekking agency completes the Khangchendzonga National Park permit and fees at the check post, with ID for Indians and the Protected Area Permit for foreigners. Rules on group size and guides change, so check current status before you travel.

Use the day to check gear: warm sleeping bag, down jacket, rain shell, broken-in boots, gloves, a sun hat and a refillable bottle. Some items can be hired or bought in Yuksom, but quality varies. Meet your guide and porters, and confirm what the agency provides.

Walk up to Dubdi Monastery and back, about 2 hours, as a gentle test for legs and lungs. Eat well, drink water, avoid alcohol and sleep early; the first stage to Sachen or Tshoka starts in the morning.

Questions travellers ask

Before you book

Do I need a permit for the Goecha La trek?

Yes. Indians need a Khangchendzonga National Park permit and fees at Yuksom, arranged through a registered trekking agency with a licensed guide. Foreigners also need a Protected Area Permit in a group of two or more, on top of the Sikkim RAP. Check current status before you travel.

Can I trek to Goecha La without a guide?

No. Current rules require trekkers in Sikkim's protected areas to go through a registered agency with a licensed guide. Solo trekking is not permitted. This is for safety, rescue and park management. We work with registered local partners in Yuksom.

How much does the Goecha La trek cost?

Indicatively ₹15,000–30,000 per person for an 8–10 day group trek from Yuksom with a registered agency, including guide, cook, tents, meals and permits. Private treks and premium operators cost more. Transport to Yuksom and personal gear hire are usually extra.
