Cook a Sikkimese dinner with a Yuksom family
Join your homestay host in the kitchen to cook a home-style Sikkimese dinner of rice, dal, greens, pickles and perhaps momos or gundruk soup, using produce from the family's fields.

Homestays in Yuksom cook with what the season and the fields give: rice, lentils, potatoes, squash, mustard and other greens, chillies, and in winter radish and cabbage. Fermented foods such as gundruk (dried, fermented greens) and kinema (fermented soybean) are common in the kitchens of the Nepali and Limbu communities here.
Ask your host a day ahead whether you can help with dinner. You might learn to fold momos, make a simple gundruk soup or grind a tomato and chilli achar on a stone. Families vary; some are glad of company in the kitchen, others prefer to cook alone.
Eat together if invited, and try the local tea or chhang if offered (decline politely if you do not drink). A small extra payment for a cooking session is fair; agree it in advance.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
What is gundruk?
Gundruk is a fermented and dried leafy green, usually from mustard, radish or cauliflower leaves, made after the harvest and stored for the year. It is cooked into a sour soup or pickle and is common in Nepali and Limbu kitchens in Sikkim and Nepal.
Can vegetarians eat well at Yuksom homestays?
Yes. Rice, dal, seasonal vegetables, greens, potatoes and pickles form the core of most meals, and meat is often a side dish. Tell your host in advance. Strict vegans should explain clearly, as ghee and butter are common.
Is a cooking session included in the homestay price?
Not usually. Most homestays include dinner and breakfast but not a cooking lesson. Ask your host a day ahead and agree a small extra payment, indicatively ₹500–1,000 per person. Some families are happy to let you help for free.
