The hot stone bath is a household tradition in Sikkim and Tibet, used to ease aches after farm work and long walks. River stones are heated in a fire until they glow, then lowered into a wooden tub of water, where they hiss and slowly release heat. Some versions add herbs such as artemisia to the water.
Several Pelling hotels and spas offer it, including Norbu Ghang Retreat and Spa. After a 5–6 hour drive from Gangtok or Siliguri, or a day of monastery steps, 30–40 minutes in the tub loosens the legs. Winter evenings, when Pelling drops to a few degrees above freezing, are the best time.
Ask how the bath is prepared and whether herbs are added. People with heart conditions, high blood pressure or pregnancy should avoid very hot baths. Drink water before and after, and do not go in straight after a heavy meal or alcohol.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
What is a dotho hot stone bath?
A traditional bath in which river stones heated in a fire are lowered into a wooden tub of water, warming it slowly. It is used in Sikkim and Tibet to relieve aches and tiredness, sometimes with herbs added. In Pelling some hotels and spas offer it as a paid treatment.
How much does a hot stone bath cost in Pelling?
Indicatively ₹1,000–2,500 per person depending on the hotel and length of session, sometimes more as part of a spa package. Book a few hours ahead so staff can heat the stones. Prices change by season; check current status before you travel.
Is a hot stone bath safe?
For most healthy adults, yes, if the water is not too hot and you stay in for 20–40 minutes. Avoid it if you have heart disease, high blood pressure or are pregnant, and after drinking alcohol. Keep water nearby and get out slowly, as you may feel light-headed.
