Sunrise on Kangchenjunga from the helipad
A short pre-dawn walk from Upper Pelling to the helipad, the widest free viewpoint in town, to watch first light strike Kangchenjunga, Kabru and Pandim across the Rangeet valley.

Pelling's helipad sits at about 2,200 m on a flat shoulder above Upper Pelling. It has no regular flights, so most of the time it is simply open ground with a near 360-degree view. Leave your hotel about 30 minutes before sunrise with a torch and a warm jacket; the walk from the Upper Pelling junction takes around 10 minutes on a road.
On a clear morning the summit of Kangchenjunga, 8,586 m, turns pink before anything else catches light, followed by Kabru to the left and Pandim to the right. The Rangeet valley below stays in shadow for a while, and prayer flags on the ridges begin to move as the air warms. From October to March this happens on most mornings; in spring haze often builds by 8 am.
Bring a flask of tea or buy one in Upper Pelling afterwards. Photographers should carry a telephoto lens for the summit and a wide lens for the ridge. If the helipad is in use or closed, Sangacholing ridge and the Pemayangtse lawns give similar views.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
What time is sunrise in Pelling?
Around 5:00 am in May and June and about 6:15–6:30 am in December and January. Aim to arrive at the helipad 20–30 minutes earlier, because the summit catches light before the sun clears the eastern hills. Your hotel staff will know the exact time for the week.
Is the Pelling helipad open to visitors?
It is generally open ground that visitors walk on freely, as there is no regular helicopter service. On days when a helicopter is expected, or for official use, access can be restricted. Follow any instructions from police or staff, and check current status before you travel.
Which month is best for Kangchenjunga views from Pelling?
October to December gives the most reliable views after the monsoon has cleared the air, followed by January to March. April and May often bring haze by mid-morning. June to September is the monsoon, when cloud can hide the range for many days in a row.
