Short answer

Family homestays in Uttarey, the cool village at about 2,000 m on the Singalila Ridge near the Nepal border, beyond the Singshore Bridge. Simple rooms, home cooking and forest walks for travellers who want quiet.

Uttarey sits at about 2,000 m on the northern slopes of the Singalila Ridge, about 35 km from Pelling, and has become a homestay village in the last two decades. Families with Limbu, Bhutia and Nepali roots host guests in simple rooms, cook with produce from their fields and point the way to the Mainebas waterfall, the Kagyu monastery and the forest road towards Chewabhanjang on the Nepal border.

We send travellers here who want a quiet night after the Singshore Bridge, or a base for gentle forest walks. Winters are cold, with snow on the ridge some years, and rooms are not heated, so ask for extra blankets. Uttarey is a long drive on a narrow road; leave Pelling by early afternoon. Check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask

Questions about Uttarey village homestays

How far is Uttarey from Pelling?

About 35 km, or 1.5–2 hours by car, via Dentam and the Singshore Bridge. A reserved car from Pelling costs indicatively ₹2,500–3,500 one way. Shared jeeps run between Gyalshing and Uttarey a few times a day, mostly in the morning. Roads are narrow; avoid driving after dark.

Can foreigners cross into Nepal at Chewabhanjang from Uttarey?

No. Chewabhanjang is a border pass on the Singalila Ridge, about 10 km from Uttarey, and it is not an official crossing for foreign travellers. Indian and Nepali nationals have traditionally used local paths there, but rules change. We do not plan crossings; treat the trail as a forest walk and check current status before you travel.

When is the best time to visit Uttarey?

October to December for clear views and dry trails, and March to May for rhododendrons and green forests. January and February are cold and can bring snow on the ridge, which some travellers love. June to September is wet, with leeches on the trails and slides on the road, so we avoid it.
