Sherpa Lodge is one of the better-known homestays in Okhrey, run by a local Sherpa family. Travel writers who stayed there describe a two-storey building with seven bedrooms, wood panelling for warmth and attached bathrooms, with an upstairs patio that looks over the hills. Rates have usually included breakfast, lunch, evening tea and dinner, with vegetables from the family's own garden.
It is about 10 km from Sombaria and around 30 minutes by road from the Hilley checkpost, which makes a dawn start for Barsey easy to arrange. The family can help book a car to Hilley. Rooms go quickly in April and May, the rhododendron season, so reserve well ahead. As with every homestay, standards and prices change; check current status before you travel or ask us to confirm.

Questions travellers ask
Questions about Sherpa Lodge
What is included in the Sherpa Lodge rate?
The usual rate has been around ₹1,200 per person a night including breakfast, lunch, evening snacks and dinner, with lower prices off-season. For 2026 we budget ₹1,200–1,800 per person. Confirm what is included when you book, since rates can change with demand, especially in April and May.
How do we get from Sherpa Lodge to Barsey?
Take a car up to the Hilley checkpost, about 30 minutes, pay the sanctuary entry fee there and walk 4–4.5 km to the Barsey ridge, usually 1.5–2 hours up. The family can arrange the car, which typically costs ₹600–800 one way. Many guests walk back down and are collected at Hilley around midday.
Is Sherpa Lodge suitable for vegetarians?
Yes. Home meals here are mostly rice, dal and vegetables grown in the garden, so vegetarian food is the default and eggs or chicken are extras. Tell the family in advance if you need no onion or garlic, or have other dietary rules. Bring snacks for the trail, since there is little to buy above Hilley.
