Short answer

Family homestays spread along the ridge between Rinchenpong bazaar, the old monastery and Kaluk. Simple rooms, home cooking and Kangchenjunga outside the window on a clear morning, at a price that leaves room in a budget trip for a car day to Barsey or Pelling.

Rinchenpong has no big hotels, and that is the point. A few dozen households along the road above the bazaar and on the paths towards the monastery rent out two to five rooms each, usually with attached bathrooms and hot water from a geyser or a bucket. Dinner is what the family eats: rice, dal, a seasonal vegetable such as squash or mustard greens, pickles, and chicken if you ask in advance. The district administration lists several of these homestays on soreng.nic.in, which is a useful starting point.

We match guests to a house by what they need: ground-floor rooms for older travellers, a view room for photographers, a quiet lane for couples. Standards vary from house to house, so we visit and recheck the ones we use each season rather than naming one family here. Expect power cuts in the monsoon, thin mobile data on some networks and very early mornings, because the mountain is clearest between 5:30 and 8:00 am from October to April.

Why we book it

What it does well

  • The cheapest way to wake up facing Kangchenjunga in this part of Sikkim
  • Walking distance to Rinchenpong Monastery and the Rabindra Smriti Van park
  • Home-cooked Nepali meals made with produce from the family's own terraces

Questions travellers ask

Questions about Rinchenpong village homestays

How much does a homestay in Rinchenpong cost?

Expect roughly ₹1,200–2,200 per person a night with breakfast and dinner, twin sharing, in 2026. Lunch is usually extra at ₹150–250. Rates go up in October–November and around Christmas and New Year, and drop in the July–August monsoon. These are indicative figures, so check the current rate when you book or ask us to hold a room for you.

Do Rinchenpong homestays have attached bathrooms and hot water?

Most rooms we use have an attached bathroom with a western toilet and hot water from a geyser, though a few older houses still bring hot water in a bucket. Ask before you book if this matters. Heating is rare; you get thick quilts instead, which are enough from October to March when nights fall to about 3–8 °C.

Can we see Kangchenjunga from the homestays?

From many houses on the upper road, yes, on clear mornings. The best chances are October to early December and February to April, between sunrise and about 8 am. From June to September clouds usually hide the range for days at a time. If the view matters most, ask us for a house facing north-west towards the range.
