Short answer

Family homestays and small village guesthouses in Martam, a farming village of terraced paddy and cardamom about 29–34 km from Gangtok via Rumtek. Home-cooked meals, village walks and a night of real quiet, about an hour from the capital.

Martam is a Bhutia and Nepali farming village spread across a valley of terraced rice fields below Rumtek. Several families take guests in their homes or in small guesthouses next to them, and there are also a couple of resort-style properties in the valley. We list the village rather than one family because we match guests to the house that suits them: some have attached bathrooms and views, others are simpler and closer to village life.

A stay usually includes dinner and breakfast cooked in the family kitchen: rice, dal, local greens, perhaps a chicken or pork curry, homemade pickle and butter tea if you ask. Days are for walking between hamlets, visiting Rumtek and Sang monasteries and watching paddy planting (June–July) or harvest (October–November). Expect squat or western toilets depending on the house, and power cuts in storms.

Questions travellers ask

Questions about Martam village homestays

How do we reach Martam homestays from Gangtok?

Martam is about 29–34 km from Gangtok, roughly 1–1.5 hours by car via Ranipool and Rumtek. A reserved small car costs about ₹1,500–2,000 one way. Shared jeeps run towards Rumtek and Sang from Gangtok, but times change, so most guests take a car. Your host can also arrange a pickup for a fee.

Are Martam homestays comfortable for older travellers?

Many are, if you choose the right house. Ask for a room with an attached western bathroom and few steps from the road, and avoid houses reached by long footpaths. Nights are mild at about 1,400 m, so cold is rarely a problem except in December and January, when hosts provide heavy quilts.

Do Martam homestays serve vegetarian food?

Yes. Most households cook vegetarian meals happily, as rice, dal, seasonal greens, potatoes, squash and soft churpi dishes are everyday food. Tell us in advance if you need no onion or garlic or are vegan, so the family can plan. Meat is usually chicken or pork, cooked only if you ask.
