Netuk House was built in the late 1950s as the home of Gellong Netuk Lama, who served as an executive counsellor to the Chogyal of Sikkim. It stands on Tibet Road, once the main route out of Gangtok for traders and travellers heading towards Tibet, and the family has run it as a guest house for decades. The building keeps its painted woodwork, carved window frames and Tibetan-style furnishings.
There are traditional and more modern rooms; ask for one with a balcony on the Kangchenjunga side. The kitchen is the heart of the place, serving Sikkimese and Tibetan home cooking, and guests often eat together. Expect older plumbing and staircases rather than lifts. It suits travellers who want to stay somewhere with a story, and it sits about 10 minutes on foot from MG Marg.

Questions travellers ask
Questions about Netuk House
Who was Netuk Lama?
Gellong Netuk Lama was an executive counsellor to the Chogyal (king) of Sikkim in the 1950s, and Netuk House was his family home. The house was built on Tibet Road, the old route towards the Tibetan passes. His family still runs it as a guest house, and staff are usually happy to talk about its history.
Is Netuk House good for a honeymoon?
For couples who prefer character to luxury, yes. Rooms are warm and traditional, meals are home cooked and the house is quiet in the evenings. It has no spa, pool or room service menu of a large resort. If those matter, look at Elgin Nor-Khill or the Taj and Mayfair resorts instead.
Is Netuk House within walking distance of MG Marg?
Yes. It is about 10 minutes on foot from MG Marg along Tibet Road, mostly downhill on the way into town and uphill on the way back. Cafés, Lal Bazaar and the Paljor Stadium Road taxi stands are all within 15–20 minutes' walk, so you will rarely need a car in town.
