Short answer

A Bhutia village on the Ravangla–Legship road that started a community homestay programme in 2003. A village tourism committee shares guests between participating families. Rooms are in family homes among cardamom, maize and vegetable plots, a short drive from the Bon monastery.

Kewzing sits at roughly 1,500–1,600 m, about 10 km below Ravangla towards Legship. Down To Earth reported that the villagers formed an elected body, the Kewzing Tourism Development Committee, to run the programme and spread income fairly between host families rather than letting one or two homes take every guest. That model is why we like sending people here: your money stays in the village.

Hosts are mostly Bhutia Buddhist families who still farm. Guests can join in with whatever the season brings: drying cardamom in autumn, planting in spring, making butter tea or churpi. Rooms are simple and clean, usually with attached bathrooms, and meals are home-cooked. Ask your host to walk you to Kewzing's Bon monastery, one of the very few in India.

Why we book it

Questions travellers ask

Questions about Kewzing village homestays

How is a Kewzing homestay booked?

Bookings are usually handled through the village tourism committee or directly with a host family, and we can arrange it as part of a trip. The committee decides which family hosts you so that guests are shared out. Tell us about food needs, children or mobility issues in advance so the right home can be matched. Check current status before you travel.

What is there to do in Kewzing?

Walk the village paths, visit the Bon monastery founded in 1974, help with farm work, and take a day trip to Ravangla's Buddha Park and Ralang Monastery, each within about 30 minutes by car. Birders do well on the forest edges early in the morning. Evenings are quiet, often spent around the kitchen fire with the family.

Is Kewzing suitable for children and seniors?

Yes. Kewzing is lower and milder than Ravangla, and the main road runs right through the village, so you are never far from a car. Some homes have steps down to the rooms, so mention knee or mobility issues when booking. Food is simple and not very spicy unless you ask for chilli.
