Short answer

Family-run rooms scattered across upper Borong, about 5 km beyond Ralang Monastery at roughly 1,770 m. Simple, clean, home-cooked food, and a front-row view of Kangchenjunga, Pandim and Narsing on clear mornings. The base for the Borong hot spring and the Maenam ridge walk.

Borong is a farming village spread down the slope below Maenam hill, about 17 km from Ravangla by road. A handful of households take guests in spare rooms or small cottages built beside the family house. Expect a double or triple room with an attached bathroom, hot water by geyser or bucket, and meals eaten with the family: rice, dal, a seasonal green such as squash shoots or nettle, and pickle made from the hosts' own chillies.

We book Borong for travellers who want quiet more than amenities. The road ends close by, there is little traffic after dark, and the birding along the cardamom terraces is good in spring. The Borong tsachu (hot spring) on the Rangeet is a steep walk below the village and is used most in December to February. Mobile signal is patchy; tell family at home you may be offline for a night.

Why we book it

What it does well

  • Kangchenjunga and Pandim views from most rooms on clear days
  • Walk down to the Borong hot spring and back from your door
  • Home-cooked Sikkimese meals with the host family

Questions travellers ask

Questions about Borong village homestays

How do we get to Borong homestays?

Most guests come by private car from Ravangla, about 17 km and 45 minutes via Ralang. Shared jeeps run between Ravangla and Borong a few times a day, mostly in the morning, but timings shift, so ask your host. From Gangtok it is roughly 85 km and 4 hours. Check current status before you travel, as the last stretch can be rough after heavy rain.

What does a Borong homestay cost?

Plan on about ₹1,200–2,000 per person a night including dinner and breakfast, sometimes lunch too. Prices depend on the room (attached bathroom, view) and the season. Bring cash: few homes take cards, and the nearest ATMs are in Ravangla. These are indicative figures, so confirm the rate and what meals are included when you book.

Is Borong good in winter?

Yes, if you pack warm. December to February brings the clearest mountain views and is the season when local families walk down to the hot spring to bathe. Nights drop close to freezing, and rooms are not centrally heated, so carry thermals and ask for an extra quilt. Snow is rare at village level but possible on Maenam above.
