Most travellers drive straight past Mangan, the Mangan district headquarters at about 956 m, on the way to Lachung or Lachen. Hotel Tamarind is the place we use when a later start, a landslide hold-up or a Dzongu day trip makes a night in Mangan sensible. It sits on the highway, rooms are large, and the upper floors look over the town and the Teesta gorge.
Reviews are mixed: staff are praised, but some guests say maintenance has slipped over the years. We ask for recently refreshed rooms. Mangan has banks, pharmacies and a market, which Lachung and Lachen lack. Check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask
Questions about Hotel Tamarind
Should we stay a night in Mangan?
Only if it helps your plan. Most North Sikkim packages drive Gangtok to Lachung or Lachen in one day. A Mangan night makes sense if you start late from Bagdogra, want to visit Dzongu or Singhik, or a landslide delays you. Mangan is about 67 km and 2.5–3 hours from Gangtok.
Do I need a permit to stay in Mangan?
No. Mangan town itself does not need a protected area permit for Indian travellers, and Indian visitors can stay there freely. Permits are needed beyond the Toong and Chungthang check posts for Lachung and Lachen, and to enter Dzongu. Foreign nationals need their Sikkim restricted area permit in any case. Check current status before you travel.
What is there to do near Hotel Tamarind?
Singhik viewpoint, about 4 km up the highway, faces Kangchenjunga and Siniolchu on clear mornings. Dzongu, the Lepcha reserve across the Teesta, is a half-day or overnight trip with a permit. Mangan is also the centre of Sikkim's large cardamom country, and you can walk the bazaar for local produce.
