Temi Tea Garden was planted in 1969, in the reign of the last Chogyal, on the slopes below Tendong Hill, and it is still Sikkim's only large tea estate: about 177 hectares of organic orthodox tea. Day visitors see it for an hour. Staying inside the estate at Cherry Resort lets you walk the rows at 7 am, when pluckers start work and mist lifts off the Teesta gorge, and sit on a balcony over the tea in the evening.

The second half of the trip moves to Kewzing, a Bhutia village on the Ravangla–Legship road, and Bon Farmhouse, a family-run farmstay set among a few acres of tea, cardamom and kitchen gardens. It has a little more comfort than a homestay and the same home food. Between the two, you visit Ralang Monastery and Ravangla's Buddha Park. It is a trip about growing things, eating well and walking slowly.

The itinerary

  1. Day 1: NJP or Bagdogra to Temi

    Overnight Temi Sleep at 1,500 m ≈ 120 km · 4.5–5 h Meals: Breakfast next day

Your driver meets you at NJP or Bagdogra in the morning. The road climbs the Teesta valley via Sevoke and Rangpo to Singtam, then turns up the hill to Temi. Lunch on the way. Check in at Cherry Resort, inside the estate, by mid-afternoon. Take a short walk along the estate road as the light softens over the rows and the Teesta gorge below. Hotels collect Sikkim's ₹50 per person state fee. In the monsoon, NH10 closures can force a route via Melli and Namchi instead.

    About Temi Tea Garden
  2. Day 2: A day in the tea

Overnight Temi Sleep at 1,500 m Meals: Breakfast

Walk out at 7 am, when pluckers move along the rows with baskets on their backs, taking the bud and two leaves by hand. Return for breakfast, then walk down the estate road to the factory and outlet to taste the season's tea and learn the difference between first, second and autumn flush. Factory visits depend on the day's work, so treat one as a bonus. The afternoon is free; on clear evenings the Kangchenjunga range shows above the hills.

    About Temi Tea Garden
  3. Day 3: Ralang and Buddha Park to Kewzing

    Overnight Kewzing Sleep at 1,400 m ≈ 45 km · 2 h plus stops Meals: Breakfast, dinner

Leave Temi after breakfast and drive to Ralang Monastery, a Kagyu monastery founded in 1768, to see its thangka-filled hall and the older gompa nearby. Continue up to Ravangla for lunch and Buddha Park, where level paths lead to the 130 ft statue. Then drop 9 km along the Legship road to Kewzing and Bon Farmhouse. Meet your hosts and walk the farm before dinner.

    About Kewzing
  4. Day 4: Kewzing farm and monastery walk

Overnight Kewzing Sleep at 1,400 m Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

A day on foot. In the morning, walk the farm with your hosts through their tea bushes, cardamom under alder trees and kitchen gardens, and learn how the crops follow the seasons; in October and November cardamom is picked and dried in smoky kilns. After lunch, walk to Kewzing's Bon monastery, one of the few in Sikkim, and the village's Buddhist gompas along quiet lanes. Evening by the fire with farm food.

    About Kewzing
  5. Day 5: Kewzing to NJP or Bagdogra

    120 m ≈ 135 km · 5 h Meals: Breakfast

Leave after an early breakfast and drive via Ravangla, Namchi and Melli to NJP or Bagdogra, arriving by early afternoon. Buy tea, cardamom or pickles from the farm before you leave. Book trains or flights after 5 pm in case of delays, especially in the monsoon.

Questions travellers ask

Questions about this trip

Can we stay inside Temi Tea Garden?

Yes. This trip uses Cherry Resort, a mid-range resort inside the estate on Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation land, run privately. Rooms look over the tea towards the Teesta gorge. For a heritage stay, the premium version uses The Temi Bungalow, a restored bungalow within the estate.

When is the best time for a tea trip to Temi?

April for the first flush, with pluckers at work and clear mornings, and November for the autumn flush and wild cherry blossom along the estate road. October and May are also good. From December to February plucking stops, and July to September is wet.

Can we see tea being made?

Sometimes. When work is light, staff often let small groups see the withering, rolling and drying rooms, but there is no fixed tour and visits usually pause in the monsoon and the busiest weeks. Tasting at the estate outlet is always possible during opening hours.

What is Bon Farmhouse?

A family-run farmstay at Kewzing among a few acres of tea, cardamom and vegetable fields, below Ravangla. Responsible-travel listings have featured it for years. Rooms are simple but characterful, food comes from the farm, and Kewzing's Bon monastery is an easy walk.

Is this trip vegetarian-friendly?

Yes. Both stays cook largely vegetarian home food, rice, dal, seasonal greens and vegetable curries, and will skip meat entirely if you ask. Tell us about any dietary needs when booking so the farm can plan its shopping.

How far is Temi from Kewzing?

About 30 km, roughly 1.5 hours direct via Ravangla. With stops at Ralang Monastery and Buddha Park on day 3, plan on most of the day. Kewzing is 9 km from Ravangla on the road to Legship.

Is it good for families?

Yes, especially with children who enjoy the outdoors. Tea rows, farm animals and gardens keep them busy, drives are moderate, there are no permits for Indian families and no altitude concerns. Rooms are simple at the farmstay, so bring warm clothes.

Can we buy Temi tea direct?

Yes, at the estate outlet near the factory, where you can taste before you buy. Everyday grades start around ₹200 a packet and top first-flush grades cost several times more. Buying at the estate ensures it is genuine Temi tea.

Can we add Gangtok to this trip?

Yes. Temi is about 2.5 hours from Gangtok via Singtam, so you can start in Gangtok with one or two nights there, then follow this trip. That adds about ₹5,000–7,000 per person per night with car. Ask us to adapt it.
