This is the trip we suggest to first-time visitors who want to see a lot of Sikkim in a week without the permits and high altitudes of the north. It starts in Gangtok, the capital at about 1,650 m, with its monasteries, Tibetology institute and MG Marg promenade. It then crosses into Namchi district (South Sikkim) for the great pilgrim monuments of Char Dham, Samdruptse and Ravangla's Buddha Park, the Kagyu monastery at Ralang and Sikkim's only tea estate at Temi. It ends in Pelling, in the west, facing the Kangchenjunga range at close range.

We route it so no drive between bases is longer than about three hours, and each place gets enough time to enjoy rather than tick off. Hotels are good 3-star properties with mountain views where possible, including Mt. Narsing Village Resort near Ravangla. A Tsomgo Lake day from Gangtok can be added for Indian and foreign travellers with the right permits.

    Overnight Gangtok Sleep at 1,650 m ≈ 125 km · 4.5–5 h Meals: Breakfast next day

Your driver meets you at Bagdogra or NJP and drives up the Teesta valley via Sevoke and Rangpo, where you enter Sikkim, to Gangtok. In the monsoon, NH10 can be closed by slides and the route switches to Kalimpong or Algarah, adding time. Check in by mid-afternoon and walk MG Marg in the evening, Gangtok's traffic-free main street of shops and cafés. Hotels collect Sikkim's ₹50 per person state fee, valid 30 days.

  2. Day 2: Gangtok monasteries and viewpoints

Overnight Gangtok Sleep at 1,650 m ≈ 40 km · local Meals: Breakfast

Start early at Tashi View Point for the Kangchenjunga range on clear mornings, then Ganesh Tok and Hanuman Tok above the town. Visit Enchey Monastery, then the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, whose museum holds one of the finest collections of Tibetan Buddhist manuscripts, icons and thangkas outside Tibet, and the Do Drul Chorten beside it. After lunch, the Flower Exhibition Centre or the Ropeway. Evening free on MG Marg.

    Overnight Ravangla Sleep at 2,100 m ≈ 35 km · 1.5 h Meals: Breakfast

Visit Char Dham on Solophok hill at opening time, around 8 am, for the giant Shiva, the four dham replicas and the twelve jyotirlingas. Then drive an hour up to Ravangla and check in at Mt. Narsing Village Resort. After lunch, walk the level paths of Buddha Park to the 130 ft statue consecrated by the Dalai Lama in 2013, and see the gallery of the Buddha's life inside its base.

    About Buddha Park (Tathagata Tsal)
  5. Day 5: Ralang Monastery and Temi tea

    Overnight Ravangla Sleep at 2,100 m ≈ 60 km round trip · 2.5 h Meals: Breakfast

Watch for the Kangchenjunga range at sunrise from the resort. Drive to Ralang Monastery, a Kagyu monastery founded in 1768, with its large hall of thangkas and the older gompa nearby. Continue to Temi Tea Garden, Sikkim's only tea estate, planted in 1969; walk the estate road through the rows and taste tea at the outlet. Return to Ravangla for a quiet evening by the fire.

    About Temi Tea Garden

    About Pemayangtse Monastery
  7. Day 7: Khecheopalri Lake and the falls

    Overnight Pelling Sleep at 2,150 m ≈ 70 km round trip · 4 h Meals: Breakfast

Be up at first light for Kangchenjunga, which fills the sky from Pelling on clear mornings. After breakfast, drive to Khecheopalri Lake, a forest lake held sacred by Buddhists and Hindus, then Kanchenjunga Falls and, if time allows, Sanga Choeling Monastery on the ridge above Pelling or the Singshore Bridge. Last evening in Pelling.

    About Khecheopalri Lake
  8. Day 8: Pelling to Bagdogra or NJP

Questions travellers ask

Questions about this trip

Why this route instead of Gangtok and North Sikkim?

This route needs no permits for Indians, allows children of any age, stays below about 2,200 m and keeps drives under three hours between bases. North Sikkim has snow and high lakes but needs permits, a minimum two-night stay and long, high days. Many families prefer the south and west for a first week.

Can we add Tsomgo Lake?

Yes. A Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir day from Gangtok can be added with a protected-area permit through a registered agent and a registered vehicle, for about ₹2,500–4,000 per person depending on group size. Foreigners can visit Tsomgo in groups of two or more. Check current status before you travel.

How long are the drives?

About 4.5–5 hours from Bagdogra to Gangtok on day 1 and 5–5.5 hours from Pelling back on day 8. In between: Gangtok to Namchi about 3–3.5 hours, Namchi to Ravangla about 1 hour, Ravangla to Pelling about 2 hours. Sightseeing days are short hops.

Which hotels do you use?

Good 3-star hotels with mountain views where possible: Mt. Narsing Village Resort near Ravangla, and well-run hotels in Gangtok, Namchi and Pelling that we confirm when you book, based on dates and availability. All have private bathrooms, hot water and heaters in winter.

Is this trip suitable for seniors?

Yes, at the planned pace, though it is busier than our senior pilgrim trip. Char Dham has many steps and Rabdentse needs a forest walk, both of which can be shortened. Tell us about any mobility needs and we will adapt the days and request low-floor rooms.

Can we start in NJP and end in Gangtok?

Yes, the route works in reverse: NJP to Pelling, then Ravangla, Namchi and Gangtok, ending at Bagdogra or NJP. The price is similar. Ending in Gangtok suits travellers continuing to North Sikkim or the Old Silk Route.

Will we see Kangchenjunga?

Very likely on clear mornings between October and April, from Tashi View Point in Gangtok, from Ravangla and above all from Pelling. Views fade as cloud builds after about 9–10 am. In the monsoon the range is usually hidden.

What does food cost on this trip?

About ₹700–1,200 per person a day for lunch and dinner at hotel restaurants and good local places; less if you eat at simple dhabas. Breakfast is included. Gangtok has the widest choice, from Tibetan and Nepali food to cafés.

Can foreigners book this trip?

Yes. Foreign nationals need Sikkim's Restricted Area Permit, applied for online on the e-FRRO portal after arriving in India, with approval in 24–48 hours. It covers every included stop. Tsomgo needs an extra protected-area permit through a registered agent.
