Soreng is a working district town rather than a resort, and The Orchid Hotel is one of the commercial hotels the district website lists, at Pragati Chowk near the bazaar. Expect simple private rooms and basic service rather than views or extras. We use it when a journey needs a night in Soreng: for an early walk up Chuli Dara, a morning at Tharpu and Mangardzong, or as a halfway stop between Rinchenpong and Okhrey.
The advantage is location. Shared jeeps leave from the bazaar for Jorethang and Siliguri, there are pharmacies, ATMs and small eateries a short walk away, and the district hospital is in town. Book a room on the quieter side if you can, since the bazaar wakes early. As with all town hotels, check current rates and what is included before you travel.
Why we book it
What it does well
- In Soreng bazaar, close to shared jeeps, ATMs and pharmacies
- A practical overnight for Chuli Dara, Tharpu and Mangardzong
- Private rooms at a budget price
Questions travellers ask
Questions about The Orchid Hotel
Is it worth staying a night in Soreng town?
If you want to walk up Chuli Dara for sunrise, visit Tharpu and the Mangardzong site, or break the long road between Rinchenpong and Okhrey, yes. Soreng has banks, pharmacies and shared jeeps, which Rinchenpong and Okhrey lack. For views and quiet, most travellers prefer to sleep in Rinchenpong, Kaluk or Okhrey.
How far is Soreng from Jorethang and Siliguri?
Soreng is about 28 km from Jorethang, roughly an hour by road, and about 100 km from Siliguri, around 4 hours via Melli and Jorethang. The Siliguri–Melli stretch follows NH10 along the Teesta, which closes after landslides in the monsoon; the alternative is via Kalimpong. Check current status before you travel.
Does The Orchid Hotel serve food?
Check when you book, since services at small town hotels change. Either way, Soreng bazaar has several simple eateries serving momos, thukpa, chowmein and rice-dal thalis for about ₹120–250. Breakfast places open early because shared jeeps leave for Jorethang and Siliguri from around 6–7 am.
