Short answer

A handful of small family homestays at Hilley, around 2,750 m at the road-end entrance to Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary. Basic rooms and hot meals, with the forest trail starting outside, for walkers who want to be on the ridge at sunrise.

Hilley is a checkpost, a few houses and the start of the trail into Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary. The Soreng district website lists several homestays at the sanctuary entrance, among them Barsey Residency Homestay, Lali Gurash Homestay and Royal Barsey Homestay, and a few more families take guests in season. Rooms are simple, bathrooms may be shared in some houses and meals are rice, dal, vegetables and eggs, served hot.

The reason to sleep here rather than in Okhrey is the early start: you can be on the trail at first light and on the Barsey ridge for the morning view of Kangchenjunga before cloud builds up. At about 2,750 m, Hilley is cold year-round at night, with frost from November to February. Electricity and mobile signal can be unreliable, so charge devices when you can and carry a torch.

Questions travellers ask

Questions about Hilley and Barsey trailhead homestays

Are there homestays at Hilley?

Yes, a few small family homestays sit near the Hilley checkpost and the sanctuary entrance; the Soreng district website lists Barsey Residency, Lali Gurash and Royal Barsey homestays among them. They are basic, with limited rooms, so book ahead for March to May. Okhrey, 8 km below, has far more choice if Hilley is full.

How cold does it get at Hilley at night?

Hilley is about 2,750 m, so expect night temperatures near 0–5 °C from November to March and around 8–12 °C even in April and May. Frost is common in winter. Bring a fleece, a down or padded jacket, a warm hat and thermals. Homestays give heavy quilts but usually no room heating.

Is it better to stay at Hilley or walk up from Okhrey?

Stay at Hilley if a sunrise view from the Barsey ridge is your priority, since you start walking at dawn. Choose Okhrey for more comfort, more food choice and a village to explore, then drive 8 km up to Hilley early in the morning. Either way, the walk from Hilley to the ridge is 4–4.5 km.
