Nor-Khill was built in 1932 for the Chogyal of Sikkim as the kingdom's royal guest house, and visiting heads of state and dignitaries stayed here before 1975. The name is usually translated as 'house of precious things'. The Chogyal is said to have liked painting in its garden, which is still the heart of the property. The Oberoi family (B.R. Oberoi) acquired it in 1975, and Elgin Hotels runs it today.
Rooms mix Sikkimese and Tibetan details with colonial-era proportions, and the public rooms hold old photographs and royal-era objects. It sits beside Paljor Stadium, a 10-minute walk from MG Marg, yet the garden feels removed from the traffic. It suits couples and older travellers who value history and service over modern resort facilities.

Questions travellers ask
Questions about The Elgin Nor-Khill
What is the history of Elgin Nor-Khill?
Nor-Khill was built in 1932 as the royal guest house of the Chogyal of Sikkim and hosted visiting heads of state and dignitaries. In 1975, the year Sikkim became an Indian state, it was acquired by B.R. Oberoi of the Oberoi hotel family. It is now run by Elgin Hotels as a heritage hotel.
How far is Elgin Nor-Khill from MG Marg?
It is about a 10-minute walk from MG Marg, beside Paljor Stadium. The walk is mostly gentle, with a short climb on the way back. Taxis are easy to find on Paljor Stadium Road, and the hotel can arrange cars for sightseeing, Tsomgo and Nathu La.
Is Elgin Nor-Khill good for a honeymoon?
It works well for couples who like history, gardens and quiet evenings in the middle of town. It is a heritage hotel rather than a large resort, so do not expect a big pool or extensive spa. For resort-style facilities, look at Mayfair at Lower Samdur or Taj Guras Kutir at Pangthang.
