One of Gangtok's best-known mid-range hotels, open since 1997 on Tibet Road, five minutes' walk above MG Marg. Consistent service, valley and Kangchenjunga views from the upper floors, and the Tangerine restaurant and bar. A safe choice for couples and families stepping up from budget hotels.
The Chumbi Residency opened in 1997 and has kept a steady reputation for nearly three decades, which in Gangtok's fast-changing hotel scene says a lot. It sits on Tibet Road above the market, about five minutes' walk from MG Marg, and its name looks across the border to the Chumbi Valley, where the Chogyals once kept a summer palace.
Rooms come in two main categories, with the better ones facing the valley and, on clear mornings, the Kangchenjunga range. The Tangerine restaurant and bar serves Indian, continental and Sikkimese dishes, and there are meeting rooms for small events. Service is the strong point: staff are used to arranging permits, early breakfasts for Tsomgo days and late check-outs. It is a comfortable, central base.

Questions travellers ask
Questions about The Chumbi Residency
Where is The Chumbi Residency in Gangtok?
It is on Tibet Road, above the main market, about a five-minute walk from MG Marg. The walk into town is downhill; the return is a short climb. Taxis can reach the door, which helps on arrival with luggage and on early Tsomgo or North Sikkim departures.
Why is it called Chumbi?
The Chumbi Valley is the Tibetan valley just across Nathu La and Cho La from Sikkim. The Chogyals of Sikkim kept a summer palace there, and the old trade routes from Gangtok led through it. The hotel takes its name from that valley.
Is The Chumbi Residency good for families?
Yes. It is central, has a restaurant on site, and staff are used to families and older travellers, arranging early breakfasts and packed meals for long excursion days. Ask for a valley-facing room and tell us about any mobility needs so we can request a room with fewer steps.
