Rayong sunrise over the eastern ridges
Drive about 8 km towards Damthang to Rayong's roadside viewpoint to watch the sun rise over the ridges east of the Teesta while Kangchenjunga turns pink to the north-west. Short, cheap and best on cold, clear mornings.

Rayong is a roadside viewpoint about 8 km from Ravangla on the road towards Damthang and Namchi. It faces east over layer upon layer of ridges, so on clear mornings you watch the sun climb out of the haze while, behind you, the snow peaks of the Kangchenjunga range catch the first light.
Leave Ravangla 30–40 minutes before sunrise (about 5:15 am in November, 6:15 am in January). Bring a flask of tea or ask your hotel for one, gloves and a warm hat: temperatures at dawn in December can be close to freezing. The viewpoint is simple, a widened stretch of road with railings.
October to February gives the best odds. In spring, haze often softens the sunrise; in the monsoon, cloud usually hides it entirely. A car for the round trip costs about ₹800–1,200. Back in Ravangla by 7:30 am, you have the whole day for Buddha Park and Ralang.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Where is Rayong viewpoint?
About 8 km from Ravangla on the road towards Damthang and Namchi, roughly 15–20 minutes by car. Local drivers know it as Rayong sunrise point. There are no facilities, so bring your own tea and warm clothes.
Can we see Kangchenjunga from Rayong?
On clear mornings, yes, to the north-west behind you as you face the sunrise. The best season is October to February. In spring haze and monsoon cloud, the mountains are often hidden.
Is it worth going if it is cloudy?
Usually not. Ask your hotel the night before; a cold, starry night is a good sign. If cloud is low and thick, sleep in and try the next day. Sometimes cloud sits below the viewpoint, giving a sea-of-clouds effect, which is a bonus.
