Birding the forest edges above Ravangla
An early walk with a local bird guide along the forest roads and trails above Ravangla, towards Maenam. Look for verditer flycatchers, blue-fronted redstarts, grey bushchats and, with luck, pheasants. Good for beginners and serious birders.

The forests around Ravangla sit at the meeting point of temperate oak and rhododendron woodland and the farmed slopes below, which makes the edges rich in birds. Wikipedia's Ravangla entry lists verditer flycatchers, blue-fronted redstarts and grey bushchats, and the rare satyr tragopan in the higher forests of Maenam.
A local guide will start at first light on the road towards Maenam sanctuary, then walk slowly along forest trails, stopping where birds feed. Spring (March to May) brings song and breeding colours; October to December brings clear light and winter visitors moving down from higher altitudes.
Expect about ₹1,500–2,500 for a guided morning. Bring binoculars, layers and rain cover. Tragopans are shy and rarely seen; a good guide will be honest about the odds. Combine with breakfast back in town and Buddha Park later in the morning.
