Two statues before breakfast: Namchi's hill circuit

A morning car loop that takes in Samdruptse's Guru Rinpoche, the Rock Garden and Siddhesvara Dham's Shiva while the light is clear and the coaches are still on the road from Gangtok. Two religions, two hills, one tidy half day.

Start at Samdruptse soon after it opens. The statue of Guru Padmasambhava, the 8th-century teacher credited with bringing Buddhism to Sikkim, stands about 135 ft tall on the wish-fulfilling hill. Walk the steps slowly, turn prayer wheels clockwise and look north: on clear October to December mornings Kangchenjunga lines up behind the town.

Drop down to the Rock Garden for a short walk among its terraces and ponds, then cross town to Solophok. Siddhesvara Dham opened in 2011 and gathers replicas of Badrinath, Jagannath, Dwarka and Rameswaram, plus twelve jyotirlingas, around a 108 ft Shiva. Allow 1.5 hours. Shoes come off inside the shrines; carry socks in winter.

We finish with tea in Central Park. The whole loop is about 25 km of driving. Hire a car from your hotel or the Namchi taxi stand; agree the route and waiting time before you start. Entry fees are small and paid at each gate, and parking is extra.

Questions travellers ask

Before you book

Can we do Samdruptse and Char Dham in one morning?

Yes. They are about 25 minutes apart by car, and each takes 1–1.5 hours. Start at 7:30–8 am and you will be done by lunch. In peak season (May, October) tour groups arrive from Gangtok around 11 am, so the earlier you go, the quieter both sites are.

Is there a dress code at Char Dham?

There is no strict dress code, but modest clothing is respectful, and shoes must be removed inside the temples. Leather items are discouraged in some shrines. Carry socks for cold stone floors in winter. Photography is generally allowed outside; ask before photographing inside.

Are the sites accessible for elderly travellers?

Partly. Char Dham has broad paths and ramps with some steps; you can see the main statue without much climbing. Samdruptse has a long flight of steps up to the statue base, but the view from the lower terrace is still good. Walk slowly and carry water.
