Momos, sel roti and churpi in Central Park
An easy evening snack walk around Namchi's paved central square and the lanes behind it: steamed and fried momos, thukpa, sel roti, local pickles and hard churpi to take home. Cheap, safe and a good feel for daily life in a Sikkimese district town.

Namchi's Central Park is where the town meets after work. Families sit on the steps, teenagers practise football tricks and the snack stalls light up as the sun goes down behind the Darjeeling ridge. Start with a plate of momos, pork, chicken or vegetable, served with a fiery tomato and chilli sauce.
Walk the lanes behind the square for sel roti, the ring-shaped rice-flour bread fried at festivals, and for a bowl of thukpa or gyathuk when the evening cools. Small shops sell bamboo-shoot and dalle chilli pickles in reused bottles, and churpi, the yak or cow milk cheese that is chewed for hours.
We do not run this as a formal tour; we give guests a map and a short list, and let them wander. Expect to spend ₹300–600 per person for a full snack dinner. Carry small notes, as many stalls cannot change ₹500. UPI payment is widely accepted in Namchi.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Is street food in Namchi safe to eat?
Generally yes, if you choose busy stalls where food is cooked fresh in front of you. Momos and thukpa are steamed or boiled hot. Drink bottled or filtered water and go easy on the chilli sauce if you are not used to it. Carry a refillable bottle and ask your hotel to fill it.
What is churpi and can we carry it home?
Churpi is a hardened cheese made from yak or cow milk, sold in small cubes threaded on string. It keeps for months without refrigeration, so it travels well. It is very hard and is sucked or chewed slowly. Soft churpi, used in cooking, is also sold fresh.
Are there vegetarian options?
Yes. Vegetable momos, thukpa, aloo dum, chana and sel roti are easy to find, and Namchi has several pure-vegetarian restaurants near the market catering to Char Dham pilgrims. Ask whether momos are made with egg in the dough if you avoid egg.
