Kangchenjunga sunrise from the Namchi ridge
An early drive up towards Samdruptse or Solophok to watch first light turn Kangchenjunga pink, with Namchi still in shadow below. Best on clear post-monsoon and winter mornings. Short, cheap and worth the alarm.

Kangchenjunga, at 8,586 m the world's third-highest mountain and the guardian deity of Sikkim, sits about 70 km north-west of Namchi in a straight line. On a clear morning the first sun catches its summit while the valleys are still blue, then slides down the ridge towards Kabru and Pandim.
The best spots are on the roads up to Samdruptse and Solophok, where the town falls away below you. Leave your hotel 30–40 minutes before sunrise (around 5:15 am in November, 6:15 am in January). Bring a flask of tea; the sites themselves open later, so you watch from the road edge or viewpoint.
October to February gives the best odds; spring haze often softens the view by April, and the monsoon hides it almost completely. A taxi for a 2-hour sunrise run costs about ₹800–1,500. Dress warmly: Namchi mornings in December and January can be 4–6 °C.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Can you see Kangchenjunga from Namchi?
Yes, on clear days, mostly October to February and some spring mornings. The view is best from higher points like the Samdruptse and Solophok roads. In the monsoon (June to September) clouds usually hide it. Mornings are clearer than afternoons in every season.
What time is sunrise in Namchi?
Roughly 5:00 am in June, 5:30 am in October, 6:00 am in December and 6:15 am in January. The mountain catches light a few minutes before the town does. Leave 30–40 minutes earlier to reach a viewpoint and set up.
Is it worth it if the forecast is cloudy?
Ask your hotel staff the night before; locals read the sky well. If the evening was clear and cold, the morning usually is too. If it rained late, skip it and try the next day. Cloud often lifts briefly at dawn even in shoulder months.
