Terrace farm visit

A guided look at the terraces above the river: what grows, when it is planted and how the family works, if the season suits.

Rolep's terraces grow rice, maize and vegetables, and farm life follows the monsoon. In June and July fields are flooded for rice, in autumn they turn golden, and in winter they are bare or planted with vegetables.

Walk with your host or a guide who can introduce you to families politely. Ask before entering fields, photographing people or picking crops. Most families are happy to explain if you show interest.

Wear shoes with grip, because terrace edges are narrow and slippery. Carry water, and take your litter back. A small purchase of vegetables or pickles is a fair way to thank a family.

Questions travellers ask

Before you book

When is rice planted and harvested?

Usually transplanted around June to July and harvested around October to November, but timing varies with the year and the field. Ask your host.

Can we help with farm work?

Only if the family invites you. Do not assume. Offer to help with small tasks, and do not interrupt work.

Are the paths safe for children?

Terrace edges are narrow and slippery. Keep children close and supervised, and avoid wet days.
