Birdwatching along the water

A quiet early session by the river, looking for dippers, wagtails and forest-edge birds in the warm valley.

Streams like the Rangpo suit river birds. Wikipedia's list for the nearby Pangolakha sanctuary includes the brown dipper, along with laughingthrushes, minlas and yuhinas in the forest.

Go at first light with a local guide. Walk slowly along the bank, stay behind cover where possible and listen before you look. Binoculars help.

We do not promise species. Take your litter with you, do not use recorded calls and do not chase birds. The river is dangerous in rain, so go only in settled weather.

Questions travellers ask

Before you book

What birds can we see?

Common river and forest birds such as dippers, wagtails, bulbuls and sunbirds are possible. Sightings depend on season and luck. We do not promise species.

Do we need binoculars?

They help. Bring your own if you have them. Some guides carry a pair.

When is the best season?

Usually October to March for cooler, drier weather and lower water. The monsoon is poor for walking.
