Visiting Sakewa as a guest
A respectful visit to Mankhim during Sakewa, when the Rai gather for the earth festival. You watch dance and listen to recitation as a guest of the community.

Sakewa is the main festival of the Khambu Rai, according to Wikipedia, and falls around the Baisakh full moon in spring, with a second gathering in late autumn. At Mankhim, the Rai community gather twice a year. The exact day follows the lunar calendar, so ask locally and check current status before you travel.
The ceremony includes recitation by a ritual leader and circle dances to drums and cymbals. Many movements mirror farm work and animals. Dress in modest, comfortable clothes, stand where volunteers direct you and never step into a dance circle uninvited.
Ask before photographing people, especially during rituals, and offer to share pictures. Do not use drones. Buy a snack or tea from local stalls if they are open, and avoid asking performers to repeat steps. The festival belongs to the community, and you attend as a guest.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
When is Sakewa at Mankhim?
The spring Sakewa falls around the Baisakh full moon, usually April or May, and a second gathering is held in late autumn. The exact day changes each year. Ask your homestay or the local committee and check current status before you travel.
Can tourists take photographs?
Often yes, but ask first. Some rituals are private, and individuals may refuse. Do not use flash during recitation and do not block dancers. Offer to share photos. Never fly a drone over the gathering.
Do we need to book a stay for the festival?
Yes, book early. Homestays near Mankhim and Aritar fill with families on festival days. Confirm the dates with your host, because lunar dates shift each year, and ask about transport, since the road up is narrow and parking is limited.
