Walking Martam's paddy terraces
Walk the field bunds and village paths of Martam with a local guide, through rice terraces, bamboo groves and hamlets. Green in summer, gold before the autumn harvest, and always quiet.

Set out after breakfast with your host or a guide from the village. Paths follow the edges of terraces, cross small streams on stepping stones or log bridges, and link clusters of houses where people are working in kitchen gardens or tending cattle. The route can be as short or as long as you like; two to three hours is a good loop.
The terraces change through the year. In June and July families plant rice seedlings in flooded fields, often working together in groups. By August the valley is deep green. In October and November the rice turns gold and is cut by hand, threshed and dried in the sun in front of the houses. Ask before photographing people at work.
Walk only on bunds and paths, not across fields, and follow your guide where paths cross private land. In the monsoon, paths are muddy and leeches are active, so wear leech socks and shoes with grip. In the dry months, carry a hat and water.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
When are Martam's paddy fields greenest?
From late July to September, after planting in June and July, the terraces are at their greenest. In October and November they turn gold before the harvest. From December to May the fields are bare or planted with winter crops, though the village is still pleasant for walking.
Do we need a guide for walks in Martam?
We recommend one for the first walk. Many paths cross private land, and a local guide knows which are open, introduces you to neighbours and explains what is growing. Expect about ₹800–1,500 for a group for a few hours. Your homestay host can often guide you.
Are there leeches in Martam?
Yes, in the monsoon months from June to September, especially in grass and damp forest. Wear leech socks or tuck trousers into socks, use salt or a lighter flame carefully to remove one, and check your legs after walks. In the dry season leeches are rare.
